We recently connected with Shannon Maillet and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on was the first book trailer that I created, for Tide of Darkness by Amarah Calderini, That particular trailer eventually led to the development of Emerald Frost Design. I had watched Amarah draft Tide of Darkness for years with a dream of someday publishing. She spent time writing when life allowed and cramming in hours of writing where she didn’t have them. When she was finally ready to publish, I was so proud of her and the remarkable story that she had written, I wanted to help support her however I could. So I took what I knew and applied it to helping her market her book. Once I began bringing her world and its characters to life through a trailer, I immediately fell in love with the process. I loved not only my own excitement over seeing it come together, but seeing the joy it sparked in her as she watched her story come to life in a new way.
After seeing how much I enjoyed the process and the final product, Amarah began encouraging me to establish what is now Emerald Frost Design. She saw the potential it could have when I wasn’t quite there yet and I’m so thankful that she pushed me to pursue this path. We now work in the same industry supporting and lifting each other up, as well as others in our industry. I think as creative entrepreneurs it is so important that we cheer each other on. Imposter syndrome is real, it is difficult and it strikes us when we least expect it. It helps to have friends who care just as much about us and our work as we do. Friends who truly support us when we need it. If it hadn’t been for my excitement to help Amarah pursue her dream, and for hers to encourage me, Emerald Frost would not exist. I am forever grateful for her presence in my life in more ways than I can count, the establishment of Emerald Frost is now just one more thing to add to that list.

Shannon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi there, I’m Shannon. I live in Alaska with my husband and our daughter. We enjoy spending our time outside and camping is our favorite activity as a family. I am also a creative entrepreneur who started my business from home in the midst of being a stay at home mom. Before becoming a mom, I had spent many years working as an operations manager. During my time as a manager I honed in on my business and marketing skills. Later allowing me to create my own business when the opportunity presented itself by combining my love of film and reading into my own creative outlet.
What started as excitement to help my friend with her debut, soon grew into a passion for helping other authors pursue their dreams. My team and I now create book trailers, cover reveals and promotional videos for a variety of authors and bookish businesses. We enjoy working on each individual project and meeting the unique needs of all of our clients. With a focus on engaging audiences and enhancing the literary experience, we take pride in our ability to translate words into spellbinding visual content.
It can be challenging for authors and businesses to find unique ways to showcase their stories and what they have to offer. Our trailers, promotional videos and marketing content take out the guesswork by producing captivating videos that truly represent their work. We communicate with each client throughout the project and aim to deliver results they are truly satisfied with. From adult high fantasy novels to children’s books and everything in between, we are here to help.
My favorite part of our work continues to be the emotional connection that our trailers provide to authors and their stories. Each project we have done up until this point has received the most amazing feedback from our clients. My favorite reactions are that someone had chills watching their video or they were moved to tears seeing their stories come alive. We strive to make each project one that our clients feel emotionally connected to and genuinely excited to share.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think both attention to detail and having a great rapport with clients helped to build our reputation. We genuinely care about each project, no matter the size of a following that someone has. Smaller accounts are treated with the same level of care and respect as authors and businesses with a larger following. I think that means so much to people.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing the joy that my creativity can bring to other people. I absolutely love the emotional reactions that trailers elicit from authors. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to show someone how truly beautiful their art is in my own creative way.
