We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Horton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shannon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. This a was a very conservative upbringing. Basically, I was raised with good midwestern traditions, beliefs, values, and ethics. Do well in school, get a college education, learn a good skillset, get a good job and stay there until you retire or die was the imprinting. My teens and twenties were filled with many jobs and discovering what I did and did not enjoy, even if I was good at those skills. I went to college my first go around for Fashion Design because I loved creativity and had great creative skills. This college experience nearly killed my love for creativity and sewing. I quit after two years and worked a 9-5 job, while embarking on a soul journey of self-discovery and purpose. I wanted more than just a job. I wanted to live a purpose filled life.
I was always drawn to Phoenix, AZ. I never understood why intuitively. I just was. During my journey of self-discovery, I found a psychic reader and holistic healer in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, at one of the few psychic fairs. I had a session with a psychic medium, named Dale Claridy in 1999. She said, you will do what I do. You will move out west and continue learning. It felt true as if someone really saw my soul and what I was here to do. Her energy vibrated she was authentic and gifted. I met a Reiki Master Teacher and started learning Reiki and receiving my Reiki attunements in 2000. I was unsure if what Dale foretold would happen in my journey ahead, as I wasn’t doing psychic readings. I was actually working for FedEx. I scheduled a trip to Phoenix, AZ in August 2001 to visit an old friend with the intention to discover if I liked Phoenix, AZ at all. Before that trip, the Reiki Master Teacher asked me to take her table spot at a psychic fair as she was unable to keep her commitment and would lose her table fee. She encouraged me to be a psychic medium, as I was very gifted. I was terrified, but took the leap. In fact, I ended up participating at many psychic fairs after moving to Phoenix, AZ. I realized, I was very gifted and built my confidence over time. I was always very gifted intuitively and would hear and see spirit since a young age.
August 2001, I visited Phoenix, AZ for the first time. I actually loved the heat and Phoenix landscape. Most importantly, I loved the energy here. I decided after returning from that trip, I would move to Phoenix in 2002. I asked spirit for an undeniable sign that I was meant to move to Phoenix, AZ. Right after asking, I was driving home from FedEx and in from of me was an old beat up car called “Phoenix”. I never knew there was such a car made. I never saw another one of those cars again. I knew it was my sign from spirit. I made one more trip west to Phoenix finding an apartment and registering for Graphic Design School, thinking, maybe this is what I would enjoy doing completely ignoring what Dale said I would be a psychic medium. I packed up my 2003 Toyota Corolla with my cat and the basics. I mapped out my drive with an old fashioned paper Atlas and drove west June 30, 2002. I landed in Phoenix, AZ July 2, 2002. I had no job lined up and boy, I was not ready for what happened after 911 in the job arena. I was unable to find steady work in a 9-5 job. I bar tended a bit. I did odds and ends. However, Judith, who owned A Peace of the Universe at the time, took a chance on me as a psychic medium and reader at her bookstore twice a week. This was my huge leap of faith moving out west with no job, just a dream for purpose filled, happy life. I would do it all again, even knowing the struggles I have been through to get to where I am today.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Often when we see a successful individual, many people do not see the ups, downs and journey the individual had to walk in order to get to where they are. I have found that many of the most successful individuals had many struggles before attaining their success. These individuals, including me, walked the dark night of the soul and discovered their true self, what they are capable of and finding their flow. In this journey, we discover our limiting beliefs, emotions, attitudes, behaviors and make a choice to either heal, change those or stay stuck in the pattern.
If I didn’t go through this journey of struggle, how could I help others tap into being their best selves and change their lives? If I didn’t walk this journey, I am unable to empathize with others. I worked a full-time job from 2005 to April 2011, while building up my clientele and brand. For two years, I struggled financially. I am grateful to my late father, who helped me financially while going through school until I found a good steady 9-5 job. I received my Associates degree from the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts instead of a graphic design degree. I quit my full time job in April 2011 and worked as a licensed massage therapist, psychic medium and happiness coach while going back to school for my bachelor degree. I was happy. Most of all, I learned how to heal my limitations and vibrate abundance. I learned true manifestation. I am grateful for the journey. I am able to help others with compassion and empathy.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Let me say one thing, we are not taught happiness and how to manifest. We are taught, if anything, limitations. We are taught how to be limited in life versus unlimited. We are taught to reinforce our limitations in school, work, home and more. We are taught other people’s opinions matter more than what we believe. I had to unlearn all the limiting beliefs, attitudes, imprints, and learn what I desired was possible. I had to learn how to manifest in this reality. True empowerment is learning who one is, and being unlimited in life. Creating an authentic life is the key to happiness. There is a blank canvas daily in front of each person. With a joy filled heart, what do you want to create? Who cares what everyone thinks? Their opinion is just that, an opinion. What matters is living the life and purpose your soul came here to live. People love to project their limitations onto others. Learn to encourage unlimitedness. Be careful of how you say things to others, including children. Help individuals become unlimited by encouraging with your words and actions this mindset. It matters. If every person lived their authentic life and had all their needs met, this world would see peace. Stop and think, before you speak: Is it kind? Does it matter? Does it encourage infinite potentiality? It matters because scientifically, your brain believes everything you watch, think, say and do is about you. It does not know the difference between thoughts for another or yourself causing your body to release healthy neurotransmitters/hormonal response or an unhealthy response. Your body feels and receives everything you think. Now, consciousness is a different story. Consciousness does know the difference and is instantly received. This means no time delay in thinking a positive or negative thought about another and them receiving it.
