We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shankura May a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shankura, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up my mother wasn’t in my life . The time I did see my mother I always knew her to be my sister . So once the family Secret was out I seen her less and less . But I always heard family members say my mother was singer and she loved sing Mary J Blige song not gone cry . So started doing music I felt if I got good enough maybe I can impress my mom when I did see her . Plus that was a way to always keep her near me in way . By singing the songs she liked . While doing that I find passion to writing and trying different music style . Still do this day me and mother bond with music .

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into by watching destiny child growing up . I loved how they was able to make people dance and smile just by they lyrics and dance moves I knew I wasn’t to do the same thing for others . So I started making music full time and started getting opportunities outside my city . Which wasn’t a bad thing but I would love to have them same opportunities in my city if that make sense. I still get love from people which make me want to keep going because what I said I wanted my music to do was doing it touching them making them feel happy , making them want to dance to the rhythm of my flow .

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I learned to people love when you be yourself . Which for me is a little too easy . I speak my mind and I have no problem cheering for the person especially if they are up and coming like myself. People seem to like what I have to say and I love that for me .

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Be open to new things , don’t let fear put you down . . Sometime being uncomfortable builds you . At least that what I feel and see it do .
