We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shanice Farrugia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shanice below.
Hi Shanice, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My artistic practice is deeply rooted in introspection and in exploring the nuances of the human experience. I seek to capture the essence of human connection through self-portraits and portrayals of loved ones.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve been working on is a series of black and white drawings that explore the concept of timelessness. With a meticulous eye for detail, I’m drawn to capturing candid, humorous moments shared with loved ones. By using black and white, I aim to elevate these fleeting experiences, imbuing them with a timeless quality, and evoke smiles, foster connections, and invite viewers to appreciate the little things of everyday life. It’s been incredibly rewarding to transform these personal moments into art that touches others and creates a sense of connection through relatable scenarios and through the lens of introspection. This project means a lot to me because it doesn’t just save my personal memories—it turns them into something people can relate to. By sharing these moments, I hope people can see bits of their own lives in my work.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Shanice Farrugia, a Maltese visual artist passionate about exploring the human experience through my work. My artistic journey began at a young age, fuelled by a passion for sketching and painting that served as an emotional outlet. I pursued a bachelor’s degree in fine art at MCAST’s Institute for the Creative Arts, where I honed my skills and developed a strong foundation in art theory and practice.
Driven by a deep-rooted curiosity about the human condition, I create introspective drawings and paintings that explore themes of identity, perception, and emotion. My primary focus lies in self-portraits and portraits of loved ones, where I meticulously capture the nuances of emotion and individuality. Through my art, I aim to create a space for contemplation, relatability, and connection, inviting viewers to explore their own vulnerabilities and find beauty in life’s complexities. I seek to capture the raw and intimate moments that define us.
I realized early on that gaining practical experience was crucial for my artistic development, so I actively sought out opportunities such as internships at galleries in Malta and Florence and participated in local and foreign exhibitions like Spazju Kreattiv and Mall Galleries. These experiences allowed me to collaborate with established artists, expanding my professional network, and enriching my understanding of the dynamic art world.
Currently, I balance my artistic practice with a role as a Museum Assistant and PR Executive at the MPM Arts Hub in Valletta – the capital city, in Malta. This position immerses me in the vibrant Maltese art scene, where I contribute to promoting local and foreign artists and their exhibitions. Combining my passion for art with professional experience has fostered a rich creative environment that allows me to connect with a diverse community of art enthusiasts, which I truly cherish. Being part of such a lively environment has broadened my view and boosted my artistic growth, helping me grow both personally and professionally.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to connect with people on a profound level through work that they can truly relate to. Witnessing how my art evokes emotions, sparks conversations, and inspires reflection is incredibly fulfilling. The creative process itself is a source of immense satisfaction, allowing me to explore my own thoughts and feelings while bringing new ideas to life. It’s a continuous journey of discovery and growth that drives me to create more art. Moreover, seeing people connect with my work and share their own stories and feelings is really rewarding.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My overarching goal is to create art that resonates with people on a profound level by fostering deeper connections through shared emotional experiences. By inspiring reflection and provoking thought, I aim to contribute something meaningful. Ultimately, I hope to create a body of work that leaves a lasting impact and that not only reflects my personal journey but also inspires others to find their own creative voices and embrace their emotional depth.
