We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shanice Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanice, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
Failure is something that everyone is scared of, including myself. It’s never easy to accept the fact that something didn’t work out the way you wanted to. When I first started my entrepreneur journey I was a part of an investment group that was helping me learn a new skill and grow as a person. It was a MLM, which didn’t scare me off at all. I was excited to be a part of a team that wanted the same goals as me.
During my time there I started to understand that everyone isn’t there for the same reasons and goals as I thought. I still wanted to continue to learn and grow so when things didn’t go as planned in the first group I switched to another team under the same company, but as they say the grass ain’t greener on the other side. I was still able to learn but it was just difficult in the type of environment I was in. Everyone was pushing a different agenda than the one I wanted to focus on. So my last attempt with the MLM I went back to my old group but under a different mentor and it was no better. Not to mention the fees I’m paying and also the people that I was mentoring had to experience this too. I’m not the type to give up or quit but sometimes you have to listen to the signs God is giving you.
I took a step back and realized that the group didn’t align with my goals anymore. I learned what I needed and it was time for me to move on no matter how bad I wanted to make it work and move up in the ranks. You only fail when you give up and I was okay with giving up on that part of my dream for a bigger goal that God placed on my heart. Sometimes you have to lose in order to win. It’s all about perspective and your mindset.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Shanice Davis. I am a business owner that specializes in creating unique items for plants, brand ambassador/ published model, content creator and investor in the foreign exchange market, in which I immensely enjoy.
I am what they consider a ‘military brat’ raised in Killeen, Texas. Both of my parents are retired veterans. My mother is a Registered Nurse, author, model and entrepreneur. She was one of the top directors in Mary Kay! My father passionately volunteers by coaching in the community. In the beginning of my basketball upbringing, and throughout my basketball career, I had the distinct honor to be coached by my father. My father taught me the fundamental skills of the game of basketball and instilled a winner mentality in me at a tender age. Despite my disparity in height, I was able to overcome that and excelled in sports through my willpower and mental toughness.
I had the honor of receiving an athletic scholarship in 2012 for basketball at McLennan Community College. During the two years there, I have done relatively well both academically and athletically. In 2014, I was extended an opportunity to transfer to New Mexico State University on a scholarship. During the two years at New Mexico State University, we created a winning program for the school and secured back-to-back NCAA WAC Championships. We also appeared in the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament. While in college, I was a part of the student- athlete advisory committee and graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics.
After my college days came to an end, I found it was not easy to secure the type of positions I wanted although I have a degree. It was often said, “get good grades, go to college, then you can get a good job.” Unfortunately, the type of jobs I applied for were all in the financial services sector at that time. I went through many interview processes, but employers would not take a chance on me because I did not have the required experience. I knew then that it was a different type of playing field. I found myself working for different call centers, sales and tech jobs for the next four years. I even became a licensed insurance agent. Every job I worked at was helpful in my young adult life, but I needed something more fulfilling that I wouldn’t have to exchange so much time for money.
The turning point for me came in December of 2020, where I was on social media, and I noticed someone that I modeled with, posted about an opportunity that would create multiple sources of income. I was enthralled about that, and decided to reach out inquiring to obtain more information. I was inspired by the real impact on others and the blueprint to gain financial security in a plethora of ways. I felt like it was divine timing, and I was ready to take the risk. This unique opportunity not only has enriched my mind but it has given me my purpose in life! The information I have accumulated is something that can transcend to many generations and truly change the trajectory of one’s life.
As I have gone through the vicissitudes of life, it has not always been easy. Without any previous history in investing in the foreign exchange markets, it created a new challenge for me. Like Frank A Clark said, “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere”. This business will test your faith and willpower to progress forward. I am not perfect, but I strive to do better every day. In dealing with the various challenges faced with being in this type of business. You not only go through obstacles, but also grow through the obstacles that are presented. This is how one can become a better person through experience. I love being able to say I have overcome an obstacle thrown in my way or working on overcoming it. It is never an ‘if’ situation but more so of a ‘when’ type of situation.“Tough times never last, only tough people do.” (Robert Schuller)
The MLM investment group helped me understand business better and what I needed to do in order to truly be financially free. Not too long after I left the group I continued my investing journey in which I was able to build my own strategy. I’ve network with different modeling agencies and have been published on online websites and even on a storefront window in my hometown! I fell in love with creating content and spreading my gift this way. Which helped me concocted “The life of Nicey” on Youtube to show my journey. Once 2022 rolled in I decided to open up my plant business on MLK day. I’m a plant parent of many and love how they improve productivity, reduce stress and boost moods! All that is needed for everyone during this pandemic.
I am most proud about being the person that can truly help others achieve their goals and aspirations in life. I am truly honored when I’m able to improve the quality of one’s life by becoming a positive influence and resource. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a perpetual mark that can never be erased!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I think it’s very important to empower yourself and search for the knowledge you’re seeking. After I graduated, the first book I read and retained information about was called the Business of the 21st century by Robert Kiyosaki. My mentor at the time gave it to me when I tried out my first MLM with Amway in 2017. This book was powerful because it shaped my perspective of life and where I wanted to be in the 4 quadrants of business. When I was a part of the MLM investment group they had calls that were motivational and shared book audios that have shaped me tremendously. One of the audiobooks that stuck out to me was Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill and Trading for a Living: Psychology, Trading Tactics, Money Management by Alexander Elder. This helped me with my mindset and keeping focus in the midst of the storms that will come. I’ve upgraded from book audios and actually started my own book collection. My favorite book to reread is the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth by T. Harv Eker. This book has so many gems that I didn’t want to miss anything so I like to go back and read through it once a month!
There is nothing like hearing motivation from someone that has made it through their storm and is encouraging you to push through yours. Eric Thomas is by far the best speaker there is. I had the honor of hearing him speak in person at the Investfest hosted in ATL by EYL ( Earn your leisure) this year! I even made an apple playlist that has my favorite TGIF recordings which is a part of my daily routine. I also like to go to youtube and listen to Kobe Bryant, Jim Rohn, Les Brown, and Robin Sharma. They give great insight on mistakes that they’ve made and can save you time from making these mistakes. They all also give you insight on that you’re not the only one that has to endure what you’re experiencing. All of the great leaders had to go through real tough situations too. You can make it out just like they have!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building anything is hard let alone getting real people to interact with you the way you want on social media. When I was in the MLM investing group they had a 10/10/10 rule. Post 10 times (on your story), Like & Comment on 10 people’s posts, and find 10 new people to follow.
This strategy has helped me build a real audience on my social platforms better and step outside of my comfort zone. Strangers will support you more than people you know. It takes a couple of minutes to make someone else’s day and say something uplifting or show love. I’m the type of person to like everything because I want to support as many people as I can. People will always remember how you made them feel. This builds up trust and shows others you’re there to support and not hate. Reposting people on your page/story for example like a funny reel or good information they shared is a good way to build a group of people that have similar thinking. Soon they will be interested in what you’re posting about and be intrigued to listen and help you out. They might start posting you on their page and that’s free advertisement for you. We never know who might need the information or product and what door that could open. Following 10 new people isn’t always the easiest depending on your goals. I personally changed my social media to follow people that motivates me or is on the same career path I’m on. You have to monitor the information you’re feeding your mind daily! I’ve come up with a system for all my social media platforms where this helps me grow them all at a consistent pace. Consistency always wins in the long term game!
