We were lucky to catch up with Shania Rice recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shania, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As an artist, the journey has never been a clear path. The only thing clear about is knowing that I want my art, my craft, to impact more than anything. Working in music with the intention of “making it” is definitely more about the business side than the actual music. No artist ever wants to feel boxed in. The thing we tend to admire most in the freedom of expression. When I tap into different sounds it’s like tapping into a different alter ego each time and I love it. With that comes feeling misunderstood. The industry standard, especially when making a name for yourself is to stick to one genre and run with it. I’d say I’m still wrapping that concept around my head. What I am learning is to use this to my advantage and still create what I want but release to a target audience and build my supporters.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who aren’t familiar, I go by Aries the Artist. I create relatable and memorable music has always had my heart. I refer to myself as an artist because I can’t be limited by just one title. I am a singer/songwriter/musician/dancer/content creator/and rapper. As of right now I am still independent. Being an independent artist comes with a lot of sacrifice and investments. I can’t pretend like everyday is a walk in the park because the process consists of multiple storms. Knowing the right people will significantly advance your career. I’ve learned so much in the past year simply from sitting in the right rooms. In 2022, I took a much needed break from performing to get my mind right. That’s what many won’t tell you. We are taught to believe that the hustle nature is healthy when in reality, we need time to reflect…time to care for ourselves. Discipline is my top priority in all areas of my life. I’ve factored in writing music and/or learning production into my daily routine. Now don’t get it twisted…I definitely wake up for my 9-5 most days because this industry is not cheap by far. I’ve learned not to always get caught up in the work and remember why I’m doing what I do in the first place. 2023 has me feeling like I’m on fire in the best way. I have music coming (won’t say too much) , performances, travel, video shoots and more in the process of being curated. STL has a lot of heart in the city but it’s time to expand. I take pride in stepping into rooms and leaving my mark. I’m proud of my abilities as a creative but even more so being able to see myself clearly and radiate love and light to others. I want everyone to know that nothing worth having is easy to obtain. Don’t let this era of media we’re in fool you. Experience real life for what it is. It’s not about what other people want or expect from you. It’s about knowing your worth, walking in spirit, and moving towards your calling everyday.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Personally, the most rewarding thing I could take away from being an artist is the people you impact along the way. It doesn’t take much. It can come from face to face conversations or simply being exposed to projects I’ve created. I can’t express the feeling I get from hearing feedback pertaining to my music or visuals. Music is a universal language so being able to touch the world beyond words is an everlasting feeling.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am currently building my social media presence but in doing so I’ve realized how beneficial it is to invest in it. I’m not saying hire a professional photographer every time you post, but downloading apps like Canva for promo, purchasing ring lights or attachable lighting for your phone is a game changer. Also, having some type of theme is overall aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I like to think of myself as my brand. Sell your brand! Make people want to explore the depths of your craft. Lastly, just be you. Social media will have us losing ourselves if we don’t remember to highlight who we are.
