We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shani Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shani below.
Hi Shani, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken thus far was back in 2019. Prior to leaving my previous form of employment, I was contracting at a physician’s office in downtown Orlando. The doctor was adamant about me assisting them open their aesthetic practice.
Unfortunately, we had to close down shortly after the grand opening due to the pandemic. I had two choices; either accept another employment opportunity or indulge in full time entrepreneurship. It has definitely been the most challenging yet rewarding experience.
Shani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a self employed licensed aesthetician, as well as a premed student pursuing a career in dermatology. My passion for skincare and catering to our community, serves as my motivation.
I used to be a Makeup Artist that focused on bridal parties, but I’ve always had an interest in skincare. I often encouraged my clients that struggled with acne, hyperpigmentation and/or texture, to practice healthy skin habits in order to avoid relying on heavy cosmetics.
However, obtaining a Vi-Peel that caused a chemical burn, is what motivated me to make the transition to skincare. During my sophomore year of college, I visited a local medical spa and received the treatment via their aesthetician.
Although she informed me that she performed this service on a person of color in the past, our complexions were on opposite sides of the spectrum and we were from differentiating backgrounds.
Needless to say, the chemical burn was painful and took months to heal. The lack of curiosity, knowledge and precautions taken when offering services such as these, are what inspired me to pursue aesthetics.
Skin does not abide by the motto, “one size fits all”, which is why it’s imperative to schedule the best treatments and utilize suitable products for your skin type.
At my studio, clients are assessed and provided with individually tailored skincare regimens for their specific concerns. I offer an array of services ranging from Signature Facials to Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
With (9+) years of experience, I advise my clients to consider their diet and lifestyle habits as influential factors when it comes to the condition of their skin.
I also offer virtual consultations for those who reside outside of Orlando, Fl.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’m extremely transparent with my clients. There are a number of false advertisements online regarding skincare. The truth is, “quick fixes” are nonexistent.
Therefore, it’s imperative that I have honest conversations with my clients about what will be required in order to achieve their desired results.
Skincare is not only a financial investment, but it requires time. I also stress the fact that this journey may not be linear and that it is a team effort.
I truly believe that my ability to set an expectation based on what we’ve discussed during our consultation, transparency and client results, have helped build my reputation within the market.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
When it comes to succeeding in this field, you have to be disciplined. Anything of value won’t come easy. Motivation will only sustain you for a limited period of time. However, discipline will carry you through on the days that you don’t, “feel” like doing the things you have to do (even the things you love).
