We recently connected with Shanequa Moultrie and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanequa, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I pray that my work impacts the world in ways many other authors haven’t. I want to be remembered as being divergent. I believe people will say that I was imaginative. My goal is to touch many who have experienced or know someone who has experienced the things I write about. I will leave my stories in the hands of my children and hope that one day my stories will become movies for many to remember for the years to come. My stories will be my legacy for my children, future grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. Not just financially, but for the messages I am leaving behind. To the world I am sending out messages. For my children I am showing them that it is possible to make a difference.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 31 year old creative born and raised in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina. I currently reside in Charlotte, North Carolina. I fell in love with writing as a small child in elementary school. I created my first book in 2nd grade. I found peace in writing poems, music, short stories and just about anything to get a message out. I’ve always kept a manila folder filled with pieces of my work. It wasn’t until 2019 when I decided to do my research and get my first book published. I felt like I was sitting on my hidden talent for way too long. It was time to share it and embrace my talent. I am very proud of myself for taking that leap of faith and publishing my first book. I did not expect that amount of love and support. I am forever grateful. I want my followers and fans to know that I have so much more in store and I will be releasing more of my work for the years to come. Stay tuned!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Yes, non-creatives will probably struggle to understand that creatives are usually all over the place until the perfect pieces are put together for that one masterpiece. It may seems as if they don’t know what they want or they aren’t consistent. That’s not always the case. Creatives need things to turn out exactly how they envision it to be. A creative could be sitting there talking one minute about a tv show and now they’re locked in a room writing down ideas. Even if they’re just laying in bed; their minds are always working. A creative understands there’s always room for improvement. When you love what you do, there’s no such thing as being content. Non-creatives usually set a routine for themselves. Creatives are always working towards transformation. Creatives constantly seek new ways to develop their craft. There’s a difference from doing something from the head and doing something from the heart. When I’m working from my head, I maintain quo. When I’m working from my heart, I have new vision, new innovation, new creativity. Being affiliated with a creative takes patience and understanding.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that I am able to be myself. I create what I’m feeling. There’s no one standing over me telling me how my work should be. I’m doing this all while being monetize for it. I have met some wonderful people who have shown endless love due to my creativeness. I have weekly if not, monthly conversations with people because of it. The fact that I actually inspire people was my biggest reward. I love making people feel good and confident about themselves. I feel successful just knowing that alone.
