We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shanell Tutstone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanell , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

It was the year of 2020 one of the most rewarding yet difficult years that I’ve ever lived through. I decided to bake my family a pound cake. After I finished baking I decided to take a quick picture and post it to my Facebook page. I set my phone down for a couple of hours and came back to check my notifications and there was so many notifications that I couldn’t respond to them all. It was at that moment I thought baking could provide my family and I with some additional income. I immediately started taking orders and shipping cakes and gourmet cookies across the USA. I was excited and determined that I would create a name for my family.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Shanell. I go by Shay. I often hung out with my grandma Ms. Charlotte Ann Simpson in the kitchen watching and learning her baking techniques. The year 2020 changed my life. I’m most proud of the woman/business owner that I have become. In just a few short years of opening my shop located in Riverdale GA I have made some of the best delicious treats and met some of the best customers ever. My Brand Heavenly Cakes holds me accountable to serve my community and provide every customer with a little slice of Heaven on earth.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Fundings my business was not easy. By the first year my savings account for the business was depleted. By the Grace of God I was able to land a full time position and work remotely right from my bakery office.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Building my social media presence was not easy. However, I was consistent and dedicated with each post. I learned that everything is content. My advice to you if you’re just starting out is to remain consistent even when the likes are low.
