We were lucky to catch up with Shanell Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shanell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As a licensed cosmetologist, my journey has been driven by a profound mission: to empower individuals through enhancing their appearance and boosting their confidence. This mission stems from my early beginnings, when I discovered my passion for hairstyling in middle school. Graduating from high school, I set out to establish my own haircare business, complete with products and services, while obtaining my cosmetology license.Since 2014, I’ve dedicated myself to this craft, finding immense joy in the transformative power of beauty. Witnessing the elation on clients’ faces as they see the results of my work is immensely rewarding. Yet, this journey has been far from effortless. It’s been marked by trials, errors, and the invaluable lessons of entrepreneurship. But through it all, I’ve remained guided by my unwavering commitment to making others feel their best.My mission is deeply personal, rooted in the belief that when people look good, they feel good. It’s about more than just aesthetics; it’s about fostering self-confidence and self-care. I’ve learned that success in this industry requires more than just technical skill—it demands dedication, resilience, and a willingness to continuously grow and evolve. As a mother of three boys, my role extends beyond that of a cosmetologist. I wear many hats, balancing the demands of family life with the responsibilities of running a business. Yet, it’s this very balance that fuels my motivation to excel in my craft and be there for my clients, serving not only as their hairstylist but also as a confidante and a source of support. In essence, my mission isn’t just about styling hair—it’s about making a positive impact on people’s lives. It’s about building relationships, fostering trust, and leaving a lasting impression. Every client interaction is an opportunity to uplift and inspire, and I’m grateful for the privilege to do so each day.

For instance, offering $20 blowouts at one point resulted in significant business growth and increased visibility.Above all, honesty and expertise are paramount in building trust with clients. By providing honest suggestions and recommendations based on my expertise, I’ve been able to establish myself as a reliable authority in my field. This trust has translated into client loyalty and positive word of mouth, further fueling the growth of my social media presence. In summary, building a social media audience requires a multifaceted approach that combines networking, consistency, strategic partnerships, and honesty. By prioritizing these elements, I’ve been able to cultivate a thriving online community and drive success for my business.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One crucial lesson I had to unlearn was the notion that all money is not good money. Initially, upon graduating high school, my primary focus was solely on financial gain. However, as I delved deeper into my career, I realized the importance of finding fulfillment and enjoyment in what I do.While I am passionate about hairstyling, I recognized the need to strike a balance between work and personal life to prevent burnout. I’ve learned that prioritizing my well-being and happiness ultimately leads to greater success and satisfaction in my career.By shifting my mindset to focus on my love for hairstyling rather than solely on financial gain, I’ve been able to achieve a better balance between work and home life. This shift has not only improved my overall happiness but has also contributed to the quality of service I provide to my clients.I’ve come to understand that when you’re genuinely passionate about what you do, the money will naturally follow. I am incredibly grateful for the talent and skills I’ve been blessed with, allowing me to provide tangible results and make a positive impact in my clients’ lives.
