We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shane Meyer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shane, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I’ve been a tattoo artist for over 20 years. When my wife first got cancer, she had so many doctors appointments she couldn’t work anymore. Long story short, I opened my own shop so she could have something to be a part of to give her some self worth back.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started off as a body piercer. One day, the shop was slow, so I began drawing to pass the time. The shop owner where I was walked by and seen my drawing and asked why I wasn’t tattooing. From there he wouldn’t stop bringing it up until I tried it. Took off pretty quick and blossomed into what it is now, an art that I love dearly and am very passionate about.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My clientele growth comes from how much love and passion each client sees when they get something done. From professionalism, quality and taking all the time needed to give the best possible piece for each specific person. I also fill my shop with other artists that have the same passion and likeable people skills to create the professional, good vibes shop as soon as you walk in the door.

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
We sell in person, Facebook and instagram. We never sell advertising because we have found that when you put out quality, have passion and treat each client like they are family, word of mouth has been the most successors of advertising.
