We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shane Becker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shane below.
Shane, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I think about this a lot and It’s probably because I have a family now. Just yesterday I was thinking about my future and my son’s future and wondering if I could keep doing what I’m doing and still be able to make a great life for him and my family. Those thoughts can really take a toll on you. It would a lot easier and reliable if I went to a “normal” job but I know myself and I would still work on music and my art after a 9-5 job.
For me I’m too far into this and honestly really bad at other things outside music to quit and find a new path now. It doesn’t make sense to give up the work I’ve done my entire life at this point.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Shane Becker and I’m a music producer and from South Jersey. I’ve been doing music as an artist forever but really didn’t step into the producer role until Covid and It’s been the best change I’ve made in my career.
I’ve been able to create a business out of songwriting, recording and producing other people’s music. It’s been a freeing process for me and actually giving me the ability to be more creative in my own music. Doing things like steam of conscious writing has also helped me remove the pressure in my music and my artists music.
But for me the best part for me is seeing the process through to the end. Beginning a song is always a little awkward and unsure but when you see the song finished it’s the best feeling. Nothing is better than seeing what was in someone’s head come to life.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I struggled for a while trying to get my social media to have a following of people who were engaging and actually cared about what I posted. What I learned was the content I was posting and my goals didn’t align and once I figured that out I was easily able to shift my thinking.
I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t showing people what I could do. It’s all about finding your niche and staying in that niche.
One thing that also is important is to engage and interact with people. This always turns people off when mentioned but it’s not about posting emojis on everyone’s posts. Engaging on social media is the same as building connections and relationships in the real world. Don’t be fake, help when you can and care about people.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the act of creativity is the most rewarding. That’s what keeps me going because if I couldn’t I would go crazy and be an awful person most likely haha.
But to add to that it’s very rewarding when people like what you create. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy what I make more than anyone else but still love when it’s loved by other people as well.
