We were lucky to catch up with Shanaira Hall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shanaira, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Over the 3 and half years that I have been in this industry I have learned that everyone is not for my business. The biggest challenge is knowing my worth and sticking to my price. A lot of people will think that because a cake cost $40 at the store that I should charge the same or less because I’m not a larger company. When it comes to being a home baker I really struggle with what my price should be. I don’t want to be so expensive that it makes people want to buy from a larger company because they are cheaper but I also don’t want to be selling myself short. Over the past year I have raised my prices because there is a lot that goes into home baking that larger companies don’t have to worry about. I am learning that it is okay to not be right for everyone but be right for yourself and the profit will come with the right people for you.
Shanaira, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Almost 4 years ago I was really struggling to find my purpose. I felt like the pandemic had slowed my life down and really allowed me to think about what I wanted and enjoyed doing in life. My sister was having a gender reveal for her now baby girl and she had asked me to make some treats. The night before the party I remember the name Fun with Sugar popping up in my head. I decided to make a Instagram and a Facebook page with the name. The next day we had the party and everyone was asking if I had a business and I didn’t know what to say at first. I simply told them yes I started it yesterday you should follow me. From then iv been self teaching myself and learning as I go. I recently enrolled in school to become a pastry chef. My business is called Fun with sugar we specialize in EVERYTHING SWEET. If it has sugar in it we make it. I have been running this business all alone for 3 years and I am proud of that. As a mom of 1, my son sees me making myself happy and he is learning to bake at the age of 4. It has turned into a hobby that we love doing together and creating memories is all I can ask for.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been social media and word of mouth. Iv learned that most of my clients have come from other people referring me from having a great experience of their own with my business. Social media has been a great way for me to be creative and post pictures for people to not only see my work but connect with me through my posts.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m still working on building my audience on social media but I can say that consistency is key. Try to plan your content out and record everything. You can use it later even if you don’t know what you need it for in the moment
