Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shamrea Marquell . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shamrea , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
in less-than-ideal conditions, I crossed paths with a remarkable woman through a high school friend. She not only hired me for paperwork but became a source of inspiration.
This woman, who owned her own company and embraced a minimalist lifestyle while traveling the world, embodied the life I yearned for. Recognizing my struggles, she extended a remarkable offer when she discovered I was couch surfing and navigating parks for shelter. Brenda, invited me to live with her.
From that moment forward, my life took a dramatic turn. I left my previous circumstances behind, and under Brenda’s guidance, I began to build a future I had only dreamed of. Her kindness became the catalyst for a positive transformation, and to this day, she remains a strong pillar in my life—a pseudo-mom who I am immensely grateful for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey into hairstyling began unexpectedly while studying fine arts in college. My professor noticed my talent for styling hair and suggested I explore it as a form of 3D art. Enrolling in cosmetology school 15 years ago, I discovered a unique way to utilize my artistic gift and help others.
I have a passion for crafting personalized looks that go beyond mere aesthetics. With extensive training and mastery in color theory, wigs, and extensions, I specialize in tailoring styles to suit your unique lifestyle. I view our time together as more than just a hair service—it’s a journey through life, strand by strand. A transformative experience aimed at raising your vibration, expressing your true self, and letting your inner beauty shine. Its never just hair for me.
In addition to my love for hairstyling, I’ve channeled my passion into a personal storytelling project—a short film capturing my own journey. While it’s not fully published, I’ve initiated fundraising efforts to break the silence surrounding personal struggles and empower others to find their voices. Last year, we raised $7,000 for Safe ATX, an organization dedicated to supporting survivors.
Soon, I’ll be releasing the short film on my social media accounts. Moreover, I allocate a portion of my wig sales towards a savings account, intending to host another fundraiser. This initiative aims to provide a platform for artists to share their stories of overcoming trauma. Regardless of the challenges we face, we are all worth the fight, and I’m committed to helping others discover their resilience.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling part of being an artist is sharing my work with others, whether it’s a painting or a hairstyling creation. I enjoy receiving feedback and hearing how clients or observers feel about the art. While hairstyling provides instant results, the depth of emotions can be surprising. I’ve had people tear up when they finally get the hair they’ve always wanted. It’s rewarding to see individuals transform into living works of art in motion.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to find inspiration in various people. Last year, taking a business class with Leah Fisch, a High-performance mentor for neurodiverse business owners, was a game-changer for me. Her insights transformed my habits in tremendous ways. You can check out her work here: ceorise.com. Connecting with myself on a personal level became a life-altering experience, and creating more alignment was crucial to truly be myself. Lauren Harkness played a significant mentoring role in that aspect, and you can learn more about her here: laurenharkness.com.
In addition to these influential individuals, there’s a handful of books that have profoundly shaped my perspective on life and influenced how I approach my passion and career. The list might seem a bit odd, but each of these reads has been pure gold for me. Feel free to pick any, and you won’t go wrong. They’ve been instrumental in shaping my path and outlook:
“You Are a Badass” by Jen Sincero (simple, direct, and spot-on)
“The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron
“Existential Kink” by Carolyn Elliott (not at all what it sounds like)
“The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” podcast by Mark Manson
“The Four Agreements” by Miguel Ruiz
Each of these resources has contributed to my personal and professional growth in unique and meaningful ways.
