We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shamon Ingram. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shamon below.
Hi Shamon , thanks for joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
As a sign spinner in Arizona I am often misunderstood and mischaracterized. My job is to get people’s attention and through out my 8 years of sign spinning I have created an over the top method at getting people to look at me. There is no right or wrong way to sign spin but this day and age every one has an opinion and because they’re in the safety of their cars I sometimes on the receiving end of so pretty horrible comments. I have developed thick skin but I am still human and it bothers me a lot. I am also a very spiritual person who doesn’t mind expressing my appreciation for my higher power this to is sometimes misunderstood. One of the best story I have is one day I was sign spinning for a client and at the end of the day they told me they had 7 new customers and one complaint. The man felt I was being inappropriate and he was offended, the client told him sorry you feel that way but I have to go because he is bringing in a lot of business. I am glad you knew where to call because he is doing a good job advertising. This is when I realized you can’t please everyone, and you have to be content with yourself, continue to be the best YOU you can be.
Shamon , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am currently the GM of the Aarrow Sign Spinners here in Arizona. I have been sign spinning all over Arizona for eight years and counting. Our goal is to increase clients brand awareness and to draw in traffic. When it comes to direct to the consumer advertising no one does it better than AArrow Sign Spinners. Over the year we have filled entire housing developments, sold a handful of cars, and spun for some of the most life changing events in our history.
The thing that sets us apart from you average sign holder is our dictionary of tricks called the “trickionary” that have been developed over the years to progress our craft. We also have a patient sign design that ensures that we can can perform our routines anytime any where.
Sign spinners like Rico Ellis, Matt Doolan, Davis Davis and Kadeem Johnson have been in national commercial campaigns, and that’s a goal of mine! I have been lucky enough to be an actual art exhibit in Las Vegas, NV as a part of Yumi Janairo Roth’s SPIN (after Sol LeWitt) at the Majorie Barrick Museum of Art on the campus of UNLV. It was such a heart warming experience to feel like your work is appreciated. Thanks Rayne JONES the GM of Las Vegas for allowing me to participate during a rough time in our company.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I remember early in my career I got some backlash for my over the top antics on the corner. I used to get in trouble for Twerking on the corner. During my first entry in the world sign spinning championship I was told by the GM not to twerk during a competition. I used to think I was the best sign spinner in the world until I seen all the competition from across the globe. There was no way I was making it pass the first round but I knew I can make it impact by being myself so during my second round I started Twerking. This forever changed the way sign spinning and performing are viewed by the public needless to say the crowd loved it and I made a bunch of new friends that day.
It is my never give up attitude that has gotten me this far. No one thought I would be the GM here in Arizona yet I am. No one thought my goofy hat and dance moves would get me on TV yet there I am. You have to believe in yourself in order to believe in others you have to love yourself in order to love others but most importantly you must have faith and believe in the power greater than yourself.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Is there a particular goal of mission driving in my journey? Yes my main goal is to leave behind a financial legacy for my kids and grandkids. So they don’t have to work as hard as I did to get as far as I have. I post on social media hoping I will reach the goal to be monetized for my creative thoughts. There are a lot of people that are making a lot of money doing what I am planning to do. I know it’s just a matter of time before I complete my goal.
