We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shamise Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shamise , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
First, one would have to define what success means to them. For me, success means freedom and having control of how I spend my time. My husband and I currently own four companies. An insurance agency, a mortgage brokerage, real estate, and a non-profit organization. In order to be successful I’ve learned to set clear and concise goals, be consistent, higher for my weaknesses, effectively manage my time, and to trust my gut,
Shamise , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shamise Williams. I am a wife, mother, and business woman. I founded my non-profit organization, Picked Pretty Pearls, Inc. in June 2015 after making the decision to leave a 10 year career in Corporate America. I worked 10-12 hours 6 days a week and needed to spend more time with my family. During this time off, I began to seek my purpose and God provided clear instructions to me. He said, “I want you to start a leadership program for Black girls. Don’t worry about the details, just go”. So, I began to do the work and P3 was born. My goal is to empower Black girls to see themselves as leaders. To take up space and use their voices to effect positive change in their communities. My team and I have developed programs (The LeadHER Circle), products (Pearl Packs), and a platform (PearlTalk!) that empowers, enhances, and fosters leadership skills in Black and Brown girls. I am most proud of the opportunities we’ve had to speak with girls at our annual Girls in Pearls Luncheon. Various Black and Brown women in leadership, volunteer their time to mentor and share their experiences about various topics concerning girls of color.
As the Broker/Owner of Motto Mortgage Bold, a mortgage brokerage located in Duncanville, TX. We provide consumers with various home loan options. We educate clients on the process of purchasing a home and oversee the transaction from pre-approval to clear to close. It is a very rewarding career and I enjoy helping people secure the most important purchase of their lives! I also enjoy employing others and introducing people of color to a career as a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator. Choosing a career as a licensed MLO provides a career/life balance, flexibility, unlimited income potential, and the ability to be of service to your community.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner happens to be my husband of 16 years. We were actually best friends in high school. When people find out that we’re a husband/wife team the first question they ask is, “how do we make it work”? For us, it’s simple. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. I focus on all things operational, from HR duties and system functions. While he focuses on sales and training. We understand the goals that must be met and work together to achieve them.
Yes, work always comes home. But, we don’t discuss work after a certain time to create a healthy work/life balance.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
First, people have to know what you do. This requires proper marketing, being involved within your community, and providing excellent service to those that you serve. Doing these things on a consistent basis will help build your reputation and brand recognition.
