We were lucky to catch up with Shamika Milliner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shamika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Your Vegan Chef’s goal is to inspire and nurture the community with flavorful, vibrant, and creative plant based options! We provide not only the vegan version of your favorite foods, but also nutritious meal prep, as well as catering. All meals are soy free and gluten-free. We are happy to continue to provide exquisite cuisines.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Shamika Milliner. I was lactose intolerant & wasn’t digesting meat correctly. I tried out the Vegan lifestyle. I would have my friends try my meals & record/post their reactions. Doing that intrigued others to try it, which led me into selling my meals. As time went on, I began to be more vegan for animal cruelty and wanted to stand up for the animals.
My business is Your Vegan Chef. The meaning behind my business is I like to provide the “vegan version” of your everyday favorite foods. I provide flavorful and gluten-free meals.
I’ve had many struggles throughout my business journey. I went through a tornado in 2019. My roof fell on top of me, which destroyed my apartment. While recovering from the tragedy, I’ve had a couple of friends offer their homes to me from the middle of 2019 through the end of 2020. Renting out of commercial spaces, just to keep my business going. It hasn’t been easy, but I haven’t given up yet.
Satisfying the customer and showing the world that vegan food doesn’t have to be bland. Vegan food can taste amazing and delicious.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Only of my most favorite ways to market is doing video marketing and reactions. Others seeing people trying the food, their honest reaction, as well as the customer enjoying it. It sparks interest in future customers to try!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clientele is really anyone that would like to try vegan food. I have a variety of different customers that have enjoyed our food!
I create comfort food, as well as low carb high protein meal prep.
Many people are these days are curious & also interested in trying a meat/ dairy free lifestyle!
