Shametrica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Shay’s Beautiful Creations
My mission is to be set apart from other shops. To be affordable, understanding, encouraging, uplifting, all while offering quality services.
The Reason Behind My Mission
My mission is inspired by my life experiences. I have been doing hair since I was 17 years old. I started off doing my sister hair she was my motivation any style I wanted to try she was there. As I got confident in my work, I started doing more people hair like my niece and other family and friends’ hair. It was fun but also became overwhelming, I felt like I wasn’t good enough and discouraged. The same family and friends I do their hair and they feel beautiful leave it up and brag but as soon as I say I’m not available they go and pay other to do the very style I do for them for free. For the moment I thought it was okay I believed that it’s because I was practicing and getting better but it was also quality work. Throughout the years I had so many people tell me girl you need to open your own shop. or every time I talk to you, you are doing hair. So many compliments and plenty of request and I was there I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I recently move to east Texas and was getting my hair done at a shop and the lady that was doing my hair notice I previously had braids and ask where I got my hair done at I told her I did them myself and she asked if I had pictures of my work so I showed her and she said I was looking for a braider and I was like I’m no professional or anything she said girl your work is amazing so I started working in her shop I worked there for 2 months and I started getting clients so the lady went up on my booth rent and kind of start doing bad business so at that time I knew it was time to move around I planned to be a travel stylist until I came up with enough money to get the shop so I told her that would be my last week I was paying for and I always paid a week in advance, long story short she took all my materials and supplies told me if I wanted it I would have to pay her for the next week or she would keep all my supplies me not having the money as it was I didn’t have a choice but to allow her to keep everything even though it wasn’t due to her I did and had to start completely from scratch at that time I was discourage and I felt defeated and was ready to give it all up it wasn’t worth it so I was ready to give up but so many people encourage me to keep going a quote nothing worth having comes to you easy it takes hard work, patience, consistence, and dedication. So, in a months’ time I was able to start in my own salon it’s not as fancy and nice as I want it but with time, I will get there my clients are comfortable. My goal is to motivate, encourage, and build up each and every person that steps foot in my salon.

Shametrica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Shametrica Goodman, but I go by Shay. I am braider, I create different styles that my clients bring to me. My styles are unique to me because every braider is different. I offer services to men, women, boys, and girls, services to everyone. My services include box braids, knotless braids, crochet braids, feed-in braids, cornrows, starter dread, two- strand twist, and kinky twist. I also offer services such as Hot Oil treatments for my clients dealing with scalp issues. I give my clients options to either bring their own hair or I offer the hair and include it in the price. My services are different from others because I offer quality, affordable, flexible services. I am dependable and trustworthy and always shining light on my clients, not knowing what situation my client is going through I always try to inspire them in any way possible. I am most proud of my dedication, determination, and my motivation that I have with each and every client I have. I’m honest with all my clients and to let the client know if I don’t know how to do something and i practice and look at videos to master each style to come back better each time. Shay’s Beautiful Creations is just what it is something beautiful customized by me to master for my clients. I am a very creative person and get my inspiration by looking at YouTube channels, other stylist and different styles.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Marketing Source for my business is booksy, style seat, and my business cards. I use booksy and style seat for my clients to schedule appointments, they also have a place where you can list any products that you may have to offer as well. Booksy and Style Seat are pretty much the same but have its own things that stand out. Booksy for instance is a great app for clients to look up different braiders in the area and compare prices, quality, and flexibility. they are able to look up reviews left by previous clients and even see pictures posted. The thing I love about Booksy is I’m able to track my expenses and also send receipt to my clients, and the downside is booksy will only send email and text message to my clients to leave a review but only gives my client 24 hours but it worth it. Style Seat is pretty much the same but allows you to rate your services. I dislike that style seat charges my client a fee but also charge me a fee as well. My business cards are the old fashion way of getting clients, but it works, by word of mouth passing along or just getting my name out there.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective way of building my clientele is my quality service, its efficient and affordable. My personality and hospitality towards my clients keep them happy and coming back along with my great work. I put my best foot forward when doing each client head. I am available when most braiders are not, and I don’t take breaks while doing my clients hair I respect their time when they come in and trust me to get a style done. I allow my clients free will while getting their hair done, and I also offer free snacks and drinks to my clients.
