We recently connected with Shameka Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Shameka, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on would have to be my book titled, “Redefining Life: Getting Back to God’s Original Plan.” This book is a continuation of my first book, “Precious Life”. I write about how it is so easy to deviate from the path God has laid before us-His path of righteousness. I share some of my personal stories so that the readers can see how our decisions really impact our lives. Just like Adam and Eve when they ate from the tree that God instructed them not to eat from, we have all taken part in some activity or behavior that was contrary to what God desired. Even in those moments, we learn not only about ourselves and the struggles that need to be addressed. We also learn about God and His faithfulness.
It is my desire that my stories will direct others to the loving arms of Jesus who is the author & finisher of our faith and the lover of our souls. We can experience an abundant life in Jesus. We just have to surrender wholeheartedly and get in alignment with God’s will for our lives.
Shameka, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Shameka Nicole and I like to call myself a small town girl with big city dreams. I was born and raised in a small town in Mississippi known as Kilmichael. I love my hometown, but I knew that I would venture beyond the state of Mississippi.
In 2014 I moved to Marietta, Georgia where I started afresh with my son. I would say that was the best decision ever. I met some wonderful Leaders who poured into me and could see the call of God on my life. They are the ones who prophesied some of what I am currently living out today, which leads me to my next point.
I am the proud owner and founder of Called to Write Publishing & Consulting. In addition to that, I am also a 2x international best-selling author. Ever since I can remember, I have always had a pen and journal handy. I have been writing most of my life and it has been very therapeutic for me. I have been able to use my writing to not only encourage myself but others as well. As a Christian I know how important it is to use the gifts God has graced each of us with, and I know writing is a gift He has given me to be able to exhort others. With each chance that I get to write, I do so to the glory of God.
God’s plan for my life surely exceeds anything I could have imagine because I had no idea that I would be starting a publishing company until He spoke it clearly to me during prayer in October of 2020. He gave me the name and I remember how excited I was to pen the words. At that time, I wasn’t financially able, nor did I have the mental capacity to start the business so I put it to the side knowing that one day, I would pick it up again. I launched my business on October 6, 2022, which is the exact day God gave me the name of the business in 2020.
Called to Write Publishing & Consulting offers many services to address individual publishing needs. From autobiographies, children’s book, Christian fiction novels, memoirs, devotionals, etc., we are here to assist. I know how important it is to have the support from others when trying to accomplish tasks so I would like to think of myself as my clients’ number one cheerleader. I assist with making sure they are encouraged to continue to press through any obstacles they may face during the book writing process. I offer encouragement and also hold them accountable to any plans and deadlines that are established to complete and publish their literary works. Not only do we publish books, but we also assist with journal creations. We offer a plethora of services for our clients.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Starting a business is not always easy. For me, I have found myself adjusting with each ebb and flow. There have been moments I questioned if running the business was even worth it. Those moments stemmed from constant disappointments which led me to question myself and what God has called me to do. Even in that, I have had to trust God. I remind myself to stay steadfast and to continue showing up for my business because I am working for the Lord. If there is a disappointment today, I must learn from it and make any necessary changes for tomorrow. I can’t allow what isn’t or is happening to cause me to miss God. He is still at work behind the scenes. Even when there is seemingly no movement in the natural, I can trust and believe that things are being aligned in the spirit and all things will work together for my good.
So I keep showing up! I keep making myself available! I keep prophesying over the business and potential clients! I keep speaking life!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I love how God allows us to connect with people who see things in us that we don’t see. When I moved back to Mississippi in 2021, I started out as a client services associate in the property tax department for the company I am currently employed with. In less than 3 months, my supervisor told me about a Lead position that was coming available and that she wanted me to apply. I was afraid. I didn’t think I had what it took to be a Lead. I reflected on how nervous I get when speaking to others and how my communication skills weren’t the best. But she saw something I couldn’t see, and she knew I was a great fit for the position.
I applied for the position and started taking on Lead responsibilities. Being in a place of leadership really shifted my view of myself and my abilities. I learned so much about myself and what I am capable of. I stopped allowing fear to keep me from venturing out and trying things. Challenges will come and they expose the areas where we need to be strengthened. This was a major pivot in my career as it has set me up for success in so many areas of my life. I no longer place limitations on myself, and I am open to any challenges because I feel confident I can navigate through them.
