We were lucky to catch up with Shamara Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shamara , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
When it comes down to having a business and running a business, we all would like support. I had to learn the hard way that the support we are looking for is not just going to happen. I don’t believe the saying people support popularity, I believe people support the ones that put the work in. The harder you work or what you want and the more you are showing others how hard you are working the support will just naturally come. I no longer ask my family for support because, for one, my family knows I have a business. I can say I am grateful for the ones in my family that do support me though. I don’t ask friends for support because my real friends support my business without having to ask. When we speak about support, support can really go a long way. I am honestly grateful for the word-of-mouth support. To me, that’s the most sufficient way a person can show they support you.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey hey hey, my name is Shamara but I go by Mara. I am 28 years old. I’m a Virgo, and my favorite color is Pink. I love all beauty things and I really love food. I got into my business by falling in love with just making lip-gloss at first in my living room. I’ve always been a fan of beauty things, then when I made my first lip-gloss I was super excited because it wasn’t thick like the beauty supply store lip-gloss that I use to wear and I had the option to give my lip-gloss a scent, so that’s what I did. I then went from making my lip gloss to adding new products to my business such as lip scrubs, lashes, body scrubs, and eyeshadow pallets. I believe what set me apart from others that surround me is that most of my products are handmade by me, such as my lip-gloss, lip scrubs, and body scrubs. I do plan on handmaking my own lashes soon. So running a business where the items are handmade by the owner is a plus. I am also a very creative person so having my own twist of showing how I am creative throughout my business is what also sets me apart. Something I would want my followers, fan, and potential followers to know is that my business will be forever growing to satisfy your needs. I plan on continuing to grow my business in the beauty industry by offering top-quality products.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Growing on social media can be really tricky. I can say I grew my social media just by posting every day, really. Someone told me just keep posting no matter how many likes I get, no matter how many shares I get. JUST KEEP POSTING. So that’s what I did. I always tell my friends who also have a business that no matter what the likes or shares look like long as you posted something, they see it. Since I run my own social media business pages it’s important for me to make sure I post things to catch my audience, educational and some joking just to keep them in engage. Advice that I can give to someone when it comes down to building your audience is just to be yourself. Have your own aesthetics and be completely you. If you’re out trying to copy how someone runs their social media or how they take pictures when it comes down to your work, you already failed. Be 100% you.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I can say that has helped me grow my business is just being me. I have my own way of how I promote. I have my own way of how I take product pictures. I have my own way of the aesthetics when it comes down to my business. I have my own way of the products that I sell. I just completely be myself in my own creative way and that’s how I believe I gain the customers that I have today.
