Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shalonda Thurmond. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shalonda, appreciate you joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I became a licensed real estate agent in November 2015, excited to embark on this new journey. By January 2016, I secured my very first client, who listed their home for $125,000. They were also in search of a new home, and once their property went under contract in just 22 days, we hit the ground running. After showing them about five houses, they found the perfect one and submitted an offer for a little over $200,000. Both the sale of their home and the purchase of their new one closed within a month. It was an incredible experience—exciting and nerve-wracking all at once—and it confirmed my passion for real estate.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey into real estate began in 2011 when I developed a deep appreciation for home styles, from charming Tudor designs to classic Cape Cods and practical ranches. I loved them all. Four years later, in 2015, I decided to take the leap and pursue my real estate license while working full-time in corporate America. My initial plan was to balance my corporate career and real estate business for at least ten years. However, as the saying goes, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.”
He had a greater plan for me. After just three years of being licensed, I left my corporate job and dove into real estate full-time. My passion shifted from admiring different home types to helping people achieve their dream of homeownership. To this day, it brings me immense joy, especially when working with first-time buyers or those becoming the first homeowners in their families creating generational wealth. Helping clients who once believed homeownership was out of reach is incredibly rewarding. I guide them through the process, ensuring they understand every step, including the financial programs available to support them.
For me, it’s not just about buying or selling homes; it’s about creating a lasting impact. My patience, knowledge, and genuine care for my clients set me apart in this industry, which is why 85% of my business comes from referrals. This trust and loyalty are at the heart of my brand, and I’m grateful every day to do what I love.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
On my journey to building a full-time real estate business, I quickly learned that success doesn’t come without challenges. One of my most memorable learning experiences was taking on my first biggest listing at nearly $400,000. I was so excited during my presentation that I didn’t ask all the necessary questions. It wasn’t until after I secured the listing that I uncovered several challenges.
The couple selling the home was going through a divorce, and tensions ran high. One party moved out while the other remained in the house and made it difficult for the property to sell. They sabotaged showings, created obstacles during the paperwork process, and even came to my office to speak with my broker, attempting to have me removed as their agent. Despite these challenges, I refused to give up. One of the parties still trusted me to handle the sale, so I remained committed to finding a resolution.
After over a year and a half of trying various strategies, I suggested a buyout arrangement, where one party could purchase the other’s share of the home. They agreed, and just two weeks later, we received an offer that was accepted. Finally, we closed the deal, and the house was sold.
This experience tested my patience, problem-solving skills, and resilience. It taught me that even in the toughest situations, perseverance and commitment can lead to success. Moments like these reaffirmed that I’m called to this business and that I’m equipped to navigate even the most challenging transactions.

Any advice for managing a team?
Managing a team requires being present, supportive, and approachable. I make it a priority to be available to answer questions and provide assistance whenever needed. Encouragement, education, training, coaching, and mentorship are key to their growth and success. Having team members in the office as often as possible fosters engagement and collaboration. Additionally, I set monthly team meetings where we share ideas, successes, and challenges. These meetings not only strengthen teamwork but also help boost morale, ensuring everyone feels supported and motivated to achieve their goals.
