We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shalome Patrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shalome, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Sitting on a rocky beach in Alaska many years ago, I had a dream that my art would help kids—somehow, someway.
At all of my shows I find a children’s charity to support by the sale of a painting or something else. Last year I found an amazing charity here in Phoenix called one*n*ten. This wonderful organization helps LGBTQ+ youth with programs and mentorship right here in the Valley.
I auctioned off a painting for them at my first show of 2021. For the show I did in November, I wanted to do something different, and that is when I did my most meaningful project to date.
I had an idea to create a calendar featuring 12 new sketches that can transform into a custom piece of art designed to fit in a 5×7 frame. Each month has a message about taking a negative to a positive. I have had many setbacks in life, and each time I look for something positive about the situation.
I took this idea to the charity, and they loved it! They offered to help me to print and sell it. It is just the start, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Shalome, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self-taught abstract artist. I paint and have a black-and-white sketch line as well.
My paintings are color, texture, passion… my therapy if you will. I don’t think when I paint—I put on music, and it just flows out.
Music has always created visuals in my mind; it is at the heart of my work—the beat, the words, the notes. It picks the colors and the textures that start the pieces and keeps the paint flowing to the end.
The sketch line is different. I process my day while my hand moves. It’s black and white. I like the contrast and tension you can create with those two colors
Both are morphing into different product lines that I hope to have available on my website by the end of the year.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Handbook to Higher Consciousness by Ken Keyes Jr. Changed my life and way of thinking, and I haven’t looked back since.
While reading this book I became aware of how much of my life and those around me I was trying to control. The biggest lesson I walked away with was the only thing I do or ever will have control over is myself. Learning this in my early twenties was the stepping stone and start of a lifelong thought process that has served me well.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The big goal is to help artists and kids. I want to have a place for artists to create and work; their cost is they teach their craft to children who come to have camp or classes. It is a long way off, but I get closer every day. The next step is to get my art therapy degree. :)
