We recently connected with Shalome Patrick and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shalome, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to work in a creative field my senior year of high school. I was able to spend my afternoons at a career center and took a graphic design class. This was at the beginning of computers entering the design and print world.
My dad had sat me down to say that i indeed was an artist but had no training yet and would need time, a long time to make a living selling my paintings and sketches. He told me to find a career choice that would allow me to have creativity in it. I picked graphic design and he was right.
I have been able to provide for myself and my children with a job as an art director while also building my creative portfolio and art business. I look forward to the day when the art is paying all the bills :)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a self-taught abstract artist. I paint and have a black-and-white sketch line as well.
Music has always created visuals in my mind; it is at the heart of my work—the beat, the words, the notes. It picks the colors and the textures that start the pieces and keeps the paint flowing to the end.
My paintings are color, texture, passion; my therapy if you will. I don’t think when I paint—I put on music, and it just flows out.
The sketch line is different. I process my day while my hand moves. It’s black and white, and I like the contrast and tension you can create with those two colors. I started a “420” sketch line in the past year and am looking forward to seeing it expand. I am in talks to have it placed in a couple of dispensaries now.
All product lines are available on my website.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Children. At all of my shows I find a children’s charity to support by the sale of a painting or something else. Last year I found an amazing charity here in Phoenix called one*n*ten. This wonderful organization helps LGBTQ+ youth with programs and mentorship right here in the Valley.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, seeing someone’s face in front of a painting I did and knowing they are affected by it. Teaching children how to use art tools and supplies and the therapeutic release it gives to me.
