We were lucky to catch up with Shalev Grados recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shalev , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My journey into the realm of creativity and artistry traces back to my earliest memories. From childhood, I found myself drawn to musical instruments like a magnet. Whether it was stumbling upon a piano or strumming a half-broken guitar with just a single string at a friend’s house, I always sought ways to express myself through music. One vivid memory is transforming empty water gallons into makeshift drums in my backyard, beating my heart out to avoid noise complaints from my parents and siblings inside the house.
At the age of seven, I began formal guitar lessons, igniting my passion for music even further. Growing up alongside a brother who introduced me to heavy metal, particularly bands like Metallica, I harbored dreams of becoming a rock star and immersing myself fully in a musical life.
Simultaneously, my love affair with video games grew. Immersed in virtual worlds, I found inspiration in the music accompanying these digital adventures. It was here that my fascination with video game soundtracks took root, shaping my artistic aspirations.
At the age of 18, I joined the army. During my time in service, my passion for music never waned. I was always the guy with the guitar, showcasing my love for music among my peers. During the weekends when I had free time, I consistently played in various musical groups, knowing that once I finished my three-year service, I wanted to continue pursuing my musical endeavors.
Shalev , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The way I entered the industry was by connecting with individuals who share the same passion for video games or films, both through social media and in-person events. There are numerous avenues to connect with directors and game developers, and I made it a point to stay engaged with communities in these fields through platforms like social media. Whether it’s game developers in need of a composer or directors seeking a composer for their films, I ensured that I stayed connected with relevant groups and individuals online and attended industry events whenever possible.
As for my craft, I naturally gravitate towards certain genres, but as a film and video game composer, it’s essential to expand my musical vocabulary and remain creative to meet the specific needs of each project. Adaptability and creativity are key in delivering the best possible compositions tailored to the requirements of directors and game developers alike.
One thing I’m particularly proud of is my ability to seamlessly blend different musical genres and styles to create something truly unique and memorable. Whether it’s infusing elements of jazz into a cinematic score or incorporating rock influences into a video game soundtrack, I love pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in music composition.
Ultimately, what I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know about me is that I’m deeply passionate about what I do. I pour my heart and soul into every project, striving to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression with my music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, being an artist is an intrinsic aspect of my humanity. I believe that at the heart of being an artist lies the act of creation, a profoundly powerful endeavor that transforms mere ideas into tangible realities. There’s an unparalleled satisfaction that comes from hearing your own creation come to life, knowing that you’ve breathed life into something that previously existed only in your imagination.
The essence of being an artist lies in the joy of sharing these creations with others, of offering something new and unique to the world. The reward is not solely found in external validation or recognition, but rather in the very act of creation itself. It’s about capturing the essence of an idea and manifesting it into something tangible, something that resonates with others on a deeply personal level.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by a simple yet profound mission: to evoke emotions and tell stories through my music. Whether I’m composing for a film, a video game, or any other medium, my goal is to create immersive and captivating experiences that resonate with audiences on a deep and emotional level. Ultimately, I strive to leave a lasting impact with my music, connecting with listeners and bringing joy, inspiration, and meaning.
