We recently connected with Shalea Walker and have shared our conversation below.
Shalea, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
Before becoming a professional makeup artist It was important for me to have my license as an esthetician. While in school to become an esthetician I had two jobs. My day job was working as a project manager at a NOC, and my weekend job was as a hostess at a restaurant and bar. In this moment I had finished school to become an esthetician and was recently laid off from my day job. While at my weekend job I was having a conversation with myself I said” You have been laid off and now have finished school, what are you going to tell people your profession is?” While at my hostess job a gentleman came in to the bar that I would see often. This was the day that he asked me “What do you do professionally? I said here is your chance just try it out, he is a stranger. I replied to him “I am a makeup artist.” He said I am a photographer for Ford Models, are you available this week for a photoshoot. He said I always see you here and your makeup always looks divine!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the skincare business as I have always been curious about products and the effects they have on the skin. I had bad acne growing up so I was always on the hunt to find products that work. When I was about 18 I started hanging out at a food co-op and started trying natural products. I noticed that my skin was clearing up with the use of natural simple ingredients. Now I provide facial services, makeup services and I have a skincare line comprised of food grade natural ingredients. I help people solve their skincare issues through lifestyle adjustments with food and helping clients select products that are more compatible with their skin. I find great joy in a helping people feel more confident in their skin and to walk them through their journey. The services and advice that I offer are Holistic. Meaning it’s an outside and inside job to create healthy balanced skin. I am very honest even though at times my honestly isn’t welcomed. No one really wants to hear the negative effects that caffeine and cheese have on the skin. I try to remind them that I am just the messenger. I really want people to know that answers and solutions are available to them. I know how hard it can be to struggle with your skin, but food and lifestyle changes will make a difference.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Constancy across the board is something that has helped me build and keep my reputation within the market and and my clientele. Clients know what they can expect and the outcome of services they receive, the results have stayed consistent in my 18 years of business. I have clients that have been coming to me for facials and eyebrows for over 18 years, when I see them with full brows that still need to be done it means that I have done my job preserving their eyebrows. It’s an honor when after 18 years of service you are still the chosen go to.Also being flexible and having a good attitude with clients has helped shaped my business and my reputation over the many years.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
My 401K was the initial capital from my previous job. It was small, but enough to get me started.
