We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shalawn Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shalawn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Hello, the biggest obstacle I’m finding is consistency. Consistency from customers, location, and supply. With the ever increasing cost of supplies, it causes small bakers like myself having to increase cost. Then, you get the pushback from customers saying it’s “cheaper “ at chain stores. Of course it is, but, it’s not prepared with love or care.\
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Shalawn Brooks. I am the founder and owner of Pooh’s Pastries. I bake desserts of all sorts. My most popular desserts are, cinnamon rolls, cakes, cookies and cupcakes. I have been baking for about 10 plus years. Steadily improving my craft. I feel a sense of peace when I am baking. Lost in the moment with the sweet smell of fresh fruits and vanilla. The science behind the process.
Due to having a full time job. I am currently only working Farmers Markets. I aspire to one day open a bakery. Unfortunately, the business is not as consistent as I would like. The competition is very competitive and social media along with Covid has made the trade “desirable “.
My products are made with the finest and freshest products, along with a little bit of love in every bite. If I can’t put my all in the product, I cannot put the product out for consumption. Simple as that!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I would say the best source of new clients would be venturing out to new markets. The more markets you attend, the greater your exposure becomes. You find your name being spoken more. Your costumer’s begin to follow you to different locations.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I feel my reputation began to grow as people began to try my products. No matter how highly I spoke on my product. The product has to speak for itself. Me telling people of the hours, days or years I’ve been creating is irrelevant. The first bite speaks volumes.
