We recently connected with Shakya Germany and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shakya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve always loved art, and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in it. However, when I started working on my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I quickly got burnt out with creating. The workload was intense and I started to doubt my abilities. I eventually decided to take a break from art altogether.
If I could go back in time, I would have started my art career earlier by staying consistent with creating. I would have pushed through the burnout I experienced after finishing my degree. After college, I focused on building financial stability. I got a job in the corporate world, and I started to make decent money. But I missed creating. I would always create at home as a hobby but nothing too serious. I knew that I wanted to go back to taking my craft seriously but I was afraid of failing.
I also started to see how Atlanta’s art scene was growing. There were more galleries, more art fairs, and more opportunities for artists. I felt like I was missing out and I started to regret not staying consistent with my art.
I know that it’s never too late to start an art career, but I also know that I would be further along if I had started earlier. I’m still working on my art and I’m still trying to build a career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I took a break from art after college, I explored functional art. I found my way to resin work and preserved my wedding flowers in resin. This led to my most popular piece, the floral coaster set. I now create functional art and decor using epoxy and acrylic resin, as well as alcohol ink paintings. I’m known for my floral coasters, trays, and ashtrays. I create pieces using flowers from special occasions for customers as a keepsake. I’m proud of my attention to detail and unique compositions. I love to create pieces that are dope and unique accent home decor pieces that can add personality and style to any space. They can also be a great way to show off your personal taste and interests.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Creating a more welcoming environment for artists. Being open to new ideas and different forms of expression. It also means providing artists with the resources they need to succeed, such as affordable workspaces and access to funding and more creative job opportunities. Also, recognizing the value of art. Art is not just a luxury, it is an essential part of our culture. It helps us to understand ourselves and the world around us. It also provides us with beauty and inspiration. When we recognize the value of art, we are more likely to support artists and creatives.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is a particular goal or mission driving my creative journey. I want to share the several visual ideas I have with others, adding more color and interesting pieces to everyone’s living space, creating beautiful pieces that are also special keepsakes and reminds them of specific memories. I believe that art can make people’s lives more beautiful and meaningful, and I want to use my art to do that.
I want to create art that is both visually appealing and emotionally resonant. I want my art to make people feel something, whether it’s joy, sadness, anger, or anything else. I want my art to be a part of people’s lives, and I want it to stay with them long after they’ve seen it.
