We were lucky to catch up with Shakinah Gunn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shakinah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I’ve always found it safe for me to write everything out, from my thoughts to planning my day. It wasn’t until college that I felt my voice was being heard and valued. Granted I did not stop writing, but my level of social engagement increased. From there I was able to write from my perspective and others. Eventually I took a leap of faith with trusted friends and shared some poetry pieces with them. They encouraged me to share beyond my circle and write on behalf of others that aren’t so good with words. From there I gained confidence in my gift and decided I should share on a larger scale and become an author.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have become an author and ghostwriter due to the influence of friends. I am able to captivate emotions and feelings of others and turn it into a beautiful story. I am able to take the indescribable and turn it into words that is a tell all in one scope. Yes, I will always be proud of my personal work from my own story and experiences, but when I am able to write on behalf of others and do it justice, I am more than proud.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media! Sharing some previously written poems and my recent book release (Scorned Rose from Concrete) has brought in more people than I expected. Due to many people asking me to write small pieces to ghostwriting their entire book has now put me in a place where I have to have a concrete business plan. Previous people who I’ve written for also share their appreciation for my gift so that helps as well.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Healing is my main mission. I personally have experienced so much healing and release through writing and telling my story. I really didn’t make it a priority in having an audience while in this journey, but after sharing, people have found that I am that one person who could put into words what they’ve been feeling this whole time.
