We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shakeyla Shinholster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shakeyla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I would have started earlier, and took it more seriously when I was younger. There’s no telling where I’d be professionally and creatively.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Shakeyla Shinholster is a young woman living with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) who writes, draws, and paints with her mouth. She has AMC, she is not mobile and cannot use her hands, so she began expressing herself through art and writing. After so much expression and keeping her writing and art to herself she decided to share it with others. She sells original paintings and does commissioned pieces for her clients. She is an award-winning artist, public speaker, singer-songwriter, and a self-published author. She has music on all streaming platforms. She is hoping that her work helps people to find inner peace, an open mind, and the acceptance of being different. Her life’s mission is to be a light for people across the world, and to inspire them to walk into their God given purpose.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is making people feel something with my work. I’ve witnessed people rejoice and weep because of a piece of art. My work has even inspired the next generation of artists. . I’m grateful.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to glorify God with my talents. I want to inspire others to get to know Him, and to chase their dreams along the way.
