We were lucky to catch up with Shakespeare recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shakespeare, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project for us is us. Our endeavor in creating and curating music that deeply resonates with other individuals is something that we really spend time fine tuning to a high caliber. We’ve always aimed to evoke emotions and foster a sense of connection through our art. Through collaboration and staying open to new ideas and experiences, we allow ourselves room to evolve creatively. WE are where it all starts for us with regard to meaningful projects.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We discovered that we shared a passion for music through a mutual friend named John Nakama. John facilitated our first music session together and the chemistry was undeniable. This marked the beginning of our journey into music production and songwriting as we began crafting the unique sound of “SHAKESPEARE!” over the years, we continued to refine our skills and develop our signature style.
Our breakthrough came when we joined an afterschool program called APCH, which provided resources, such as invaluable connections within the industry, a recording studio along with other things. Through APCH, we had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and further our knowledge in writing, recording, and mixing. During that time we also met our manager, Al Manerson, who guided us through the intricacies of the music industry.
Signing with Pulse Recording as writers opened up even more opportunities for us, allowing us to collaborate with a diverse range of artists including Yolanda Adams, Stokely, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Musiq Soulchild, Wale, Iyla, Keke Palmer, Trevor Jackson, Zendaya, Snoop Dogg, and Justin Bieber, among many others. What sets us apart from other writers is our commitment to understanding the essence of the artists we work with. In every session, we make it a point to connect with the artist on a personal level, capturing their unique voice and experiences in our music. This approach, coupled with our poetic lyricism, has earned us the moniker “SHAKESPEARE!”
What we’re most proud of is the relationships we’ve built with the artists we work with. Many of them come into the studio as clients and leave as part of our musical family. Our upcoming “Shakesperience,” is the next chapter in our journey, and we’re excited to share it with the world. We want our fans and potential clients to know that SHAKESPEARE! is more than just a music duo – it’s a collaborative experience where creativity, passion, and connection come together to form something truly special.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Our journey is filled with moments where our resolve to pursue careers in this industry was tested. Everyone is told “No” at one point in their lives. The people who take chances the most frequently will most likely hear it more than others. Especially if those chances are perceived as “high risk”. It was risky for us to sit in the lobby of that hotel in DTLA singing, writing and producing songs from one morning to the next morning instead of studying to be a doctor. Let alone repeating that process without compensation, direction, industry connections, knowledge of where to start or what an actual music career looks like realistically. What made it so risky was that we were spending the most finite resource we have as humans, time, to do what many others viewed as a waste of time. During those moments we have two options. We can choose to give in to how others view our risk or we can double down on what we believe and fortify our faith. We choose fortify.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We have our dream collabs and a plethora of ideas we want to bring to fruition! There are many songs waiting to be heard. Many visuals waiting to be seen and many emotions waiting to be felt. The main thing driving us is being the best versions of ourselves that we can be. We love full circle moments and opportunities to show our past/present/future selves that nothing was never nothing. Every note we’ve hummed and lyric we’ve ever written or sung was all in preparation for what’s to come. We will take that mentality and apply it across the board. We look forward to bringing high level experiences to our fans and watching that community continue to grow.
