We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ShakeriaJae Linin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
ShakeriaJae , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
ShakeriaJae Artistry was founded in 2018. I’ve always had a vision, love and passion to spread true confidence and happiness through the beauty and fashion community. For me, it’s ministry. I have realized throughout the years that yes, I am a makeup artist but my way of ministering to people is having that conversation while receiving a service. That conversation starts once you walk through the door. What does that conversation look like? Real and authentic. The mission here at ShakeriaJae Artistry is to Reveal, Revamp and Renew! Words from ShakeriaJae: “My prayer is that every person that I lay hands on has a spiritual encounter.”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into this industry by simply being my authentic self. I was always that girl that wore makeup and dressed up my uniform throughout grade school. At the tender age of 16, I worked at a clothing store in our local mall and just after 6 months I became an assistant manager. From there, I’ve managed about 7/8 stores. In 2018, I decided to start my own business and become an entrepreneur. I felt my purpose was greater than the four walls of a clothing store. I believe what sets me apart is the grace and talent that God has placed on my life. It’s not like any one else. I am most proud of still being here doing what I love. Just like any other business, there are challenges, but when you know there’s a greater purpose, you push through it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is “being married to an idea” What that simply means is, sometimes we come up or have these amazing ideas in our head that are in fact great ideas but just not great for us.
There have been many times where I’ve had great ideas for my business but they weren’t working for me and I couldn’t understand why. In some of those cases, a great deal of money were involved and it failed. I’d tell anyone, “being married to an idea can cause you to be broke”.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have been in business for five years. There have been many cases where I had to pivot. The first three years, I ran my company on how others saw fit. I was unhappy doing something that I loved. It wasn’t until 2 years ago, I realized, this gift was given to me and it is me that has the vision, not anyone else. I had to make a shift in my thinking.
