We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shakeisha Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Shakeisha , appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.

When I initially wrote my book 100 days of singleness, it began as a blog series, evolved into an email devotional and a group mentorship program before it was published for public consumption. Around the time I was about to publish, I met with a coach because I needed direction and clarity.

She asked how much I charged for my coaching program, and I told her I didn’t have one. It was the first time I had been given language for what I was doing with the ladies in my challenge and it was the catalyst to my coaching career.

Shakeisha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I began coaching professionally after informally coaching over a dozen women through my ‘100 days of singleness ‘ challenge. It was the start of my lifelong healing journey and I shared it publicly to help other women who may have been facing the same challenges.

Healing is the common theme in every program I curate. I am deeply invested in helping others realize their potential in a way that is integral and meaningful to who they truly are. Authenticity is the key to my effectiveness, and it has served me well to fully embrace my unique delivery and process so that those I lead; are inspired to embrace that same level of radical self love.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

I struggled heavily with charging for my services in the beginning. I really wanted to help people and felt charging meant less people would have access.

I’ve since come to believe that my business can be both helpful for others and profitable for me.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?

Embracing my unique story and identity has absolutely been the most important part of building my business. Authenticity and integrity are the markers I’m most proud of.
