Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sha’Keisha Hendricks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sha’Keisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back, I would have started my business later. When I first started my business, I was working my 9-5 while making custom wigs as a side hustle. It was kind of a spare of the moment thing. I didn’t take it as seriously and shortly after, took a break while I transitioned to a mom. Looking back, I would have pushed it off while I educated myself more on business, branding/marketing and studying my target audience. It definitely would’ve saved me some time. I also would’ve waited until I was at a point where I could truly and was ready to invest in myself. It is a true statement that it takes money to make money.
Sha’Keisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It’s not really much to my back story or how I got started. I kind of just did and it has been a journey and definitely a learning experience. I initially opened my business in December 2017 after wearing custom wigs I had made myself and receiving inquiries on making them for other. It started off as a hobby, slowly turned into a side hustle and eventually, a legally registered business. In addition to my new found love of custom wigs, I had always loved to accessorize with jewelry and handbags. So, why not open a business surrounding my overall love of accessorizing offering custom wigs, jewelry, sunglasses, and purses. It was really a spare of the moment thing. I cannot stress that enough, lol.
After taking a break from my business in 2018 due to my transition into motherhood, I took time to re-evaluated my brand and put more thought into what I actually wanted for my business in the long run. With that re-evaluation, I decided to drop the wig making services, rebrand and in May 2020, I officially reopened as The Perfect Accessory LLC, offering primarily jewelry. How we became primarily jewelry, well it’s simple. Jewelry enhances your every look; no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing. It enhances confidence. It makes you feel vibrant when you wear it. It’s a form of expression and in my opinion, the most important aspect of an outfit. Whether it’s an errand day and you’re wearing something light and casual or a night out when you’re going for something a little more bold, jewelry lifts up any outfit and sets the tone. It really is The Perfect Accessory.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m still building my audience on social media and learning every day. What I have learned so far is that consistency is key and showing up as your true self is the way to go. Also, make sure you take time to research and learn about your ideal customers. This will definitely help with marketing and making sure you are creating the right type of content for your audience. My advise to those who are starting out is to just be you, show up every day in some aspect of your business and keep pushing. Building your social media presence won’t be easy, but remember it’s a journey, not a race, but you’ll get there.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Nope, I have never bought a business.
