Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shakeia Brodie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shakeia, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
As a therapist I don’t give advice however there is one thing that I believe is important and I tell clients, family, friends, strangers, and my social media following to implement- Make yourself a priority. So often people are so busy caring and doing for others that they neglect themselves in the process. This is not always intentional and before you know it, it’s been days or weeks since you truly took time for yourself. Saying to put yourself first can seem like an impossible task and to some may seem selfish, but it’s not. Making yourself a priority doesn’t say that you have to stop doing what you are doing if you don’t want to, however it says you have to start identifying and acting on your needs too. When a person starts making themselves a priority, change begins.
Shakeia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mom to two sons, Zachariah & Zaivier, Licensed Professional Counselor, and an entrepreneur, better known as a Mompreneur. I opened my private practice, Arise Renewed Counseling, LLC, in 2021. I always had a desire to help through hard times and after beginning one masters program in Industrial Organizational Psychology, I decided to transition to obtaining a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Entrepreneurship has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl subsequently once I had the necessary education under my belt the next choice was building and opening my own practice. I specialize in anxiety, relationship concerns, self-esteem/confidence, addiction, and sexual issues/sexual anxiety. I am also very involved in my community from volunteering with my church and sons’ school PTA to the countless hours I have dedicated to supporting and improving Norcross Youth Athletics Association, my local sports non-profit organization that develops character and skills for the youth. Being a Mompreneur has had its difficult times with attempting to juggle everything with two very active sons yet it’s something I would never change. The difference I help facilitate makes it all worthwhile.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Build relationships with your team. Morale drives productivity. You and your team will be together for a good chunk of time and everyone feeling valued makes that time easier. Through my own experience, I’ve learned that loving what I do, who I do it with along with knowing what I value most is being respected keeps my morale high. Good compensation is always a major morale booster as well lol.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Networking. Networking is something that has always been more difficult for me than other things, however it is extremely necessary. When you’re having to give a client or anyone a referral you want to ensure it is someone you know, have a relationship with, will help in the way that is needed and properly reflect back on you. Having a relationship with that person starts when you network and as a result your network continues to grow.
