We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shakeera Springs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shakeera below.
Shakeera, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue to a creative path after my professional career in accounting was not meeting my cravings. I love to create and it rather hard to do when you are sitting behind a computer crunching numbers everyday. Alongside the boredom and redundancy, I had my fourth child which made it more difficult to be present. After having my now 7 year old I left my six figure career and have never returned.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My background is accounting and I have an active accounting and tax business. I provide on-going bookkeeping (Sweet Spot Finances Company), business and personal tax preparations (Tax Monster Financial Company), monitoring cash flow and many special case-by-case needs. I have a BA and Masters of Accounting that taught me the theory of it; however, I learned the most from experience. Understanding mathematics has always been easier than other subjects for me. I finished high school taking Trigonometry and noticed then I had a gift. I was introduced to Accounting in high school and somewhat fell in love. Since then, I have kept this talent close that makes me very good money.
I published my first book in 2013 and I’m on track to publish my second book next month. I enjoy reading because I love to learn new things. I have written so many unpublished notes that I am compiling to get them out to the world. Expect many books from me this year regarding motherhood, entrepreneurship, balancing the two and more.
Graphic design, photography, and website development is another area of expertise (Six Figure Brand Company). I only offer this service to a select few by word of mouth. It’s a passion that I have but do not have enough time to exercise it. This comes in handy for me because I save a lot of money for all my brands.
The So Refreshed Company brand is my baby. It has been business for over 5 years creating skincare and feminine care from scratch. I focus on providing clean formulas using raw ingredients. We use the farm to skin approach. We have loyal customers that are able to have their acne, eczema, dry skin and feminine issues solved.
I am most proud of the fact that all my brands are solid and have been around for over 5 years. People can depend on me and my brands to fulfill their needs. If you leave me in a room to long I will tamper with as much creative work as possible. I am limitless.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I unlearned was creating a product or service based strictly on a need. However, I learned we should start with the whys. Why do you want to start this business? Why are you providing this service or product? We should ask ourselves these questions before creating any company. When we fulfill our passion, the business will come after you show your confidence in why you started the company. When people see how passionate you are about what you offer they listen. If you are providing a service or product based on money, it makes it harder to grow.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that I am free to travel when I want. Everything is on my terms because I set the standards. Being able to spend more time with my family without having to provide legitimate reasons is bliss. I enjoy being the owner of my time. That’s something we can never get back so I spend each minute wisely.
