We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaka Watson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business in my mid 30’s, At that time I was already a Husband, a Dad and I believe having a family played a big factor in my decision to take my craft seriously. It was more so that I wanted to leave something tangible for my kids and my family, something I built that is household. Something to be proud of not just for me but for my sons looking at their Dad.
At that time I was more mature than I was in my 20’s. I don’t regret anything or any decisions I’ve made in life.. Im just grateful that I did and today I’m grateful.

Shaka, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I’m an urban photographer located in Baltimore, MD originally from Trinidad and Tobago. I specialize in wedding photography as well as portrait, corporate and special events. I’ve been in love with photography my entire life but I mastered my craft and started 3lindvision almost 10 years ago. As a father, husband, and business owner I take pride in capturing events in my clients life that matter. Sitting down with them, understanding their vision, and creating their special memory to the best of my ability. My photo journalism eye allows me to capture the mood, scene, and important portions of each event in a unique way.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
For me, understanding who I am as a photographer and staying true to my clients helped build my reputation. After gaining a sense of self; starting to network by attending events, supporting others, and sharing ideas have always helped me as well. Our community is small and it takes a village, I always say. Positive reputations help build your brand always.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele for my business has been social media. I do something called “Wedding Wednesdays” and with my clients blessing every Wednesday I showcase a previous wedding, seasonal brides, or moments weddings have in common such as garter tosses. What started off as just an idea for Facebook turned into an event that’s requested to be apart of or questioned if I miss a Wednesday. I have gained so many clients by previous brides sharing my work on Wednesdays or people following my hashtag.
