We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaina Agnew a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
After working for other companies and private salons my husband and I decided it’d be in my best interest to look into a salon that was all ours. The mobile route was the best option for us as it made it possible for us to customize every aspect of our business from the ground up. And the idea of working one on one with the pet in our own environment was very appealing. After the choice was made we got ahold of a company that builds grooming trailers for a living and within 8 months we were good to go.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’d originally planned on being in the food industry but as it would have it that wasn’t meant to be. So after getting employed by a corporate pet store I was soon asked if there was a desire for growth with the company by entering the salon. I agreed to that in 2014 and here I am today!
In this industry you’ll see a variety of beloved pets that will each come with their own special circumstances (matting of the fur, fear of the service, location and sometimes people). So it’s my responsibility to aid the pet and pet parent to the best of my ability.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to take unsure, weary and sometimes scared pets from absolutely hating the service, to being able to tolerate it, and at times, enjoy it. It’s also a great feeling knowing that something you’ve brought to fruition was able to achieve your goal and more.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Back in August of 2023 our initial trailer was involved in an accident (hit a large ravine) thay resulted in our trailers frame being damaged successfully totalling it via insurance. As luck would have it we found another trailer in a nearby town and purchasing it kept us afloat.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I strive to treat everyone with kindness and their pets as my own. Just as I would want to be treated as well.
