We were lucky to catch up with Shailyn Daniels recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shailyn, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I think the most recent album I dropped was the most meaningful project to me because it brought me closer to God. I was told to do this album and work with people I had just met, simply because God told me to. I was asked to trust these people that were large names in the industry and I had no idea how it was going to go but I had to have faith. I had no idea how I was going to find the project but I said yes anyway and a year later we completed the project. The process was hard because I wrote every song myself but the songs weren’t for me. I knew that each song would touch someone different and I wanted God to use them to reach people he knew they should. During December I was following a crazy faith series through transformation church and I was believing God to fund the rest of the album. Someone I’ve never met before ended up sending me the last 10% that I needed out of nowhere. That 10% was a large amount that is not common for people to send especially to someone they’ve never met before or had a conversation with. God got me through that entire process of the project and it was the first time I genuinely felt like he was talking to me so my album “Artistic Therapy” will forever be my baby.
Shailyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been singing since I was 4 years old and there was nothing I wanted to do more growing up. I would sing the national anthem at my own basketball games before starting and I would have to go perform for my choir during the half times of my games. I had a passion for both but music always spoke to me. One thing I want my future fans and followers to know about me is I don’t want to be another famous artist who makes music because of the money that it can potentially produce. I want my music to give women confidence and I want God to use my music to reach the people it needs to reach. I sing because I love it and I hope I can continue to touch others with it in the future.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually currently going through this part of my life so it’s ironic I was asked this question. Since I was younger, I knew that I wanted to pursue music and I’ve been striving so hard to get there. I’ve put everything into my music. All of my money, all of my time, all of my plans, music has always been the priority because I never wanted to fall short of my potential. What I forgot to do is recognize where I’m at in life. I forgot to genuinely live and appreciate life around me. I never got a new car, saved up for my own place, took trips out of the country and I wish I would have because I got burned out. It’s never too late to start living your life so this next journey I’m on is to fall in love with the world around me again and hopefully that will show in my future music when I choose to start recording again.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is seeing your work come to life. I think when modeling it’s seeing the shots when you get them back. In music, it’s hearing the stories of how a specific song you wrote helped someone else. It’s also hearing people learn the words to your songs and singing them back to you on stage because you know they connect with you. It’s a beautiful feeling.
