We were lucky to catch up with Shaily Sanghvi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shaily, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a producer Director I did a couple of projects who’s stories had an impact on people. One such project was ‘Pirouette’. It talks about the circle of life and how you get what you desire in the most unexpected ways. It talks about how often, what we choose as our passion does not choose us back. Another project, that is yet to come out is called Jasmine Flowers, it is a blend of the Indian Culture here in LA. The story talks about a common superstition still followed in a few parts of India. The story is about an old India woman living in LA, hoping to get an invite to her neighborhood wedding in-spite of her inauspicious status as a widow. The story is a fresh take on a ritual that has been in play for many years. Just while filming it became overwhelming how it resonated with so many people and had an impact on them
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Shaily Sanghvi, a Director Producer based in Los Angeles. I’ve had a successful career in India for 5 years, collaborating with top production houses before coming here.
Now, as I produce and direct in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, I carry with me the invaluable experiences and insights gained from my time in India. Drawing from the best of both worlds, I infuse my films with a beautiful blend of Eastern and Western influences, creating narratives that resonate with audiences on a global scale.
Throughout my journey, I’ve directed over a dozen films, ranging from short films to music videos, covering various genres like horror, drama, and thrillers. I enjoy exploring complex human emotions in my storytelling, and I often blend Indian and Hollywood influences to create unique cinematic experiences.
In my portfolio, you’ll find over 12 captivating films that explore the depths of human emotions. I have an unyielding fascination with delving into complex characters and their inner struggles, allowing audiences to connect with the authenticity of the human experience. It’s the interplay of emotions, the vulnerability, and the resilience that drive me to craft stories that leave a lasting impact.
The recognition for my work has been immensely gratifying. My film “Pirouette” received numerous accolades, including the prestigious “Best Drama” award at the Synergy Film Festival in 2022 and received accolades at the IndieX Film Festival. The film also earned special mentions at the Cannes World Film Festival and the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival.
“I Got You” was also nominated for awards at the Hollywood Blood Horror fest and received recognition at The Strange Days Horror Fest.
As I continue to embark on new projects, my desire to tell meaningful stories that touch hearts and challenge perspectives only grows stronger. Each film is an opportunity to push the boundaries of creativity and make a positive impact on the world. And with every project, I remain committed to enriching the cinematic landscape by blending cultures, exploring the complexities of human emotions, and leaving a mark that transcends borders.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Absolutely, it might sound a bit cliché, but as a filmmaker, there’s truly nothing quite like that surreal feeling when your audience connects with your film on a profound level, experiencing precisely the emotions you intended to evoke. It makes every moment of hard work, sleepless nights, and creative challenges feel entirely worth it.
Witnessing the raw emotions reflected on their faces, knowing that your storytelling has touched their hearts and stirred their souls, is an indescribable high. It’s the ultimate validation of your artistic vision and a powerful reminder of the magic that cinema can create.
In those moments, you realize that you’ve succeeded in crafting a powerful cinematic experience, one that resonates deeply with the audience’s own lives and emotions. It’s a beautiful reminder of the impact storytelling can have on people, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection among diverse individuals.
This validation not only fuels your passion for filmmaking but also instills a sense of responsibility to continue pushing boundaries, exploring new narratives, and touching more lives with your art. It’s a never-ending quest to elicit emotions, provoke thought, and create lasting memories through the power of storytelling.
In the end, it’s not just about entertaining the audience; it’s about leaving a lasting impact that transcends time and space. As a filmmaker, those moments of connection become the driving force that keeps you going, inspiring you to embark on new creative journeys and strive for even greater heights in the world of cinema.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot was deciding to leave a good career in India and starting here in LA. It wasnt easy in the start but as time passed by it all became worth it
