We recently connected with Shahini Fakhourie and have shared our conversation below.
Shahini, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently finished building a warp-weighted loom. stands as a testament to my artistic journey, intertwining my Jamaican heritage and global cultural connections. Its creation involved merging traditional Icelandic weaving practices with a sustainable, modern approach—a fusion of resilience and timeless creativity.
The loom is a tribute to my grandmother, who first taught me the magic of weaving, and a nod to the Icelandic traditions that captured my imagination. Each found material utilized in its construction was locally sourced and as such, steeped in their own tales.
In essence, this loom is a tapestry of heritage, interwoven with the fabric of my artistic vision. It serves as a poignant reminder of the unbroken thread that links generations and cultures, shaping my artistic pursuits and inspiring the narratives I weave.
Shahini, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My formal foray into fashion began at Miami International University, where I studied fashion design. This academic foundation opened doors, leading me to a pivotal experience—an internship at Tommy Hilfiger within the Children’s and Women’s Design Studios. There, I gained invaluable insights into the dynamic and diverse realm of the fashion industry and worked with amazing teams.
In 2017, I took a significant leap, founding my eponymous brand, focusing on luxury sustainable streetwear. My vision reaches beyond fabric and form; I challenge the conventional constraints of gender norms, infusing my designs with conceptual ideas that beckon the wearer to explore beyond the surface. With each collection, I leverage my unique perspective as an artist—a culmination of creativity and sustainability.
Through my brand, sustainability harmonizes with artistic expression. I take pride in designing pieces that not only adorn but provoke thought. Every stitch, every concept is a brushstroke, inviting you to embrace the unconventional and redefine the norm. My journey as an artist is a continual evolution, and through my work, I aspire to challenge.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of woring in a creative field lies in the ability to immerse myself in what I am truly passionate about. The joy I get from my work is profound and it consistently pushes me to grow as an individual. The ever-changing nature of my craft keeps me engaged and excited, allowing me to unlock new dimensions of creativity and understanding. In this journey as a creative, the exhilaration of continuous growth and the freedom to express myself in diverse and evolving ways is immensely fulfilling.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The fashion industry is notoriously tough- high costs and exclusivity are basically par for the course. And like many independent designers, I still face numerous obstacles — financial constraints and the demanding nature of the industry among so many other. The the love for my craft, the undeniable pull towards fashion as my true calling, is what keeps me going.
I realized that I am most in my element when I’m creating, and it’s this very love that fuels my resilience. It’s what propels me forward in the face of every challenge. This realization became my anchor. I sought alternative ways, adapted my strategies, and persevered through the difficult times. It’s this persistence and love for my work that has helped me navigate the stormy waters of the fashion industry, reminding me that when passion meets resilience, success is an inevitable outcome.
