We recently connected with Shahe Koulloukian and have shared our conversation below.
Shahe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Showing clients you appreciate them is something I think most folks want to do – but it’s not always clear how to do it in a meaningful way. What’s one of the best examples of client appreciation you can share with us?
Being that I am in the service business, I make sure I am always ready to service and the only way I feel I can do that is to not only give more then what is expected but above and beyond. I always provide specific one on one time with each and every client, no room for dismissing anything. I also provide 2 free car care classes a year for women, teen and whomever wants to be empowered about auto ownership. The class is about allowing each student the willingness to understand all the fundamentals of auto repair and ownership. Each student learns how to jump start a car, change a spare tire, check oils and fluids, change air filter and wiper blades, understands how to read the owners manual, what fluids look and smell like. What are all the warning lights and what do they mean. How to not get intimidated and learn to ask the right questions and most importantly how to be thier own first line of defense against being taken advantage of.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started Mazvo Car Care Center to provide a personal service experience that no other Auto repair facility was providing. I started at the age of 13 at my uncles repair shop in Philadelphia and now with over 38 years of automotive experience my mission has always been to build a strong relationship with all my customers by providing one on one attention and communication.
I’m extremely passionate about to educating and my driving force is to empower my customers with the knowledge they need to understand the fundamentals of automotive repair. With this knowledge, they will have the ability to make the best sensible decision in caring for their current car care needs.
Mechanics have never had the reputation for being the most trustworthy profession – but its been my personal crusade to change that perception. And for 28 years, I have strived to run my business based on empathy, not the bottom line: the crucial difference that elevates Mazvo above the competition is that I enjoy being a consumer advocate, rather than the predatorial mechanic stereotypes are made of.
Repairing cars, he says, is the easy part. Empowering customers with knowledge and witnessing their satisfaction is the reward.
I consistently give empowerment lectures at community and state colleges across the US and provides annual car care clinics for women to help them tame their fears of automotive knowledge. I have been fortunate enough to be a regular automotive spokesman on AZTV7 with Pat McMahon and Brad Perry along with a standard guest advocating the truth on the Emmy award winning syndicated TV show THE LIST. I have been nominated for the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics over 6 times and have earned many service Excellence awards through out my career from many dealerships.
My desire to care about people is shadowed by my travels around the world. I was born into a family of Armenian nationality, and have lived on three continents and fluent in six languages.
My main responsibility to my clients is to impact them to think sensibly not emotionally. I am currently completing my first book Car Confidential that is slated to release mid to late August of 2023
“ I DONT WANT TO JUST WANT TO FIX CARS; I WANT TO FIX AUTO REPAIR”
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth! From day one, its always been word of mouth! If I ever hosted a grand party for all my clients, it would be the biggest family and friends reunion ever!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Staying honest!! My father taught me as a business owner you must always be a Piranha, small bites! But a thousand small bites! Trying to take advantage of consumers to big profits is very short term! It always catches up with you
