We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaelynn Waseka a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaelynn , thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My creative journey began in early childhood, rooted in a cycle of trial and error. I remember experimenting with anything I could transform—colors, textures, nature, even discarded materials—to bring new ideas to life. Over the years, my love for creating only deepened. What once was a pile of sticks and leaves evolved into strokes of paint on canvas. This passion for artistry first became a soothing hobby, and eventually blossomed into a profitable business.
Looking back, I see that my growth unfolded at just the right pace. Each lesson and skill I developed came into my life exactly when I needed it. I held onto the curiosity of my younger self, which led to exciting and rewarding adventures. At times, doubts threatened to hinder my progress. Questions like “Will I succeed?” “Is this a waste of money?” and “Do people even like my art?” often lingered. But over time, I learned that success is not measured by financial gains—it’s about how fulfilled you feel. Money is a renewable resource, so invest in the supplies and tools that nurture your passion. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who appreciates your art as long as you take pride and joy in what you create.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I see myself as a Creative Entrepreneur with a wide range of artistic talents across various mediums. In 2020, I graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a Bachelor’s in 3D Animation and a Teaching Artist Minor. That same year, I launched my LLC, Shae’s Art Shack, initially focusing on large abstract canvas paintings. Over time, my business expanded to include logo designs, animated videos, small business marketing, and custom-made art pieces.
By 2023, I felt a desire to share my creative skills with the younger generation. I took on a part-time role at the Boys & Girls Club as a Digital Artist, where I had the opportunity to teach and inspire youth through my artistic process. This soon transitioned into a full-time position when I became the Best Buy Teen Tech Center Manager. In this role, I’ve been able to combine everything I learned in college with my passion for creativity and mentoring young minds.
Today, I continue to manage my business while working at the Boys & Girls Club’s Best Buy Teen Tech Center, balancing my entrepreneurial spirit with my dedication to empowering the next generation of creators.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that creativity and artistry are often undervalued by many. When people think of an artist, they often picture a struggling painter or a sculptor crafting clay pots, and while that may be true for some, it barely scratches the surface of what creativity truly entails. I don’t think people realize just how much their daily lives are shaped by the work of creative minds. It makes me wonder—what would a single day without creativity look like?
Buildings would be plain white and featureless. Billboards would have nothing but black text. Symbols on signs would become dull words. Every car would look identical. Movies, TV shows, and even social media would vanish. Our commute to work would be silent, stripped of music.
So many don’t recognize the contributions that creativity brings to our everyday lives. To better support those who make it possible, we need to take action. Like and download their songs. Avoid using AI to create logos or posters. Give credit where credit is due when someone presents something unique.
Invest in creativity. Pay artists for their work. Choose the beautifully crafted clay mug over the mass-produced one. Seek out creative individuals and show them appreciation for the impact they have on the world around us.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Livable wage or full-time artist—which path should you take?
We’ve all heard the term “struggling artist,” and for a time, that was me. I grappled with the age-old question: do I take a job that guarantees I can pay my bills, or do I pour everything into my art? Eventually, I found myself dreading the very act of creating. The canvas stopped being my sanctuary and instead became a constant reminder of financial pressure—a means to make ends meet rather than a source of joy.
Thankfully, I found a career that brought just as much fulfillment as my artistic pursuits. In this role, I have the opportunity to inspire and nurture young minds, passing down the creativity that has shaped so much of my journey. This balance has allowed me to reclaim the love for my art while contributing meaningfully to others’ growth.
