We were lucky to catch up with Shae Almighty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being successful is a mindset thing.
A successful person gives themselves room to grow. A person who can change, adapt, grow and learn. Anyone who thinks they know it all will never accomplish more than what they’re comfortable with. You know everything, so where are you supposed to go from here ? Either down or remain stagnant. I say they’ll never accomplish more than what they’re comfortable with because learning and unlearning things can be uncomfortable.
Knowledge alone can make you successful and being able to adapt will keep you there. The last time we spoke I talked about dropping out of college; I’ve since reenrolled as a business major. I don’t confine myself to only one version of myself. 19 year old me would have told you college is a scam and not necessary but now at 22, I sit here fully realizing that knowledge is power and returning. I feel like a lot of unremarkable people anchor themselves to one version of themself, for whatever reason, and never deviate from it. I don’t believe that “ if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to humans. That’s how you stay stagnant forever. Successful people are always growing, always learning and always adapting.
Perseverance is also what separates successful from unremarkable. The ability to not only see the greener grass, but to put in the work to get there. Before the hard work pays off, before you get the notoriety, before you get your flowers. You have to be working like you’re already getting paid. “Rome wasn’t built in a day”, a saying we’ve all heard. Yet there are still so many people out there that will quit after the first no, quit at the first obstacle or quit right before things could’ve got extraordinary.
Shae , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a 22 year old fashion designer/ seamstress/ content creator from Detroit, Michigan. I have also, very recently became a mom. I first got into sewing at a young age with my own mother. After her passing, it became something I did to remember her by and connect with her. She was actively building her brand before her passing and so I thought, let me pick up the torch. I saw her making some strides so I knew it was possible; she just didn’t have the time to fulfill her purpose. So I decided im young, creative and talented so, with God’s guidance, I’ll fulfill it.
I make clothing for men and women with important places to be, who need to look damn good when they get there. I create high quality clothing; clothing that will last more than 2 wears and 2 washes. Most importantly, I make clothing to boost the esteem and confidence of those who wear my brand.
It took my body a couple of months to snap back after having my son and I hated the way I look. I looked bad built in everything I wore but, it wasn’t because anything was wrong with my body. It’s because the $20 jumpsuit from fashion nova( no shade) did my body type at the time no justice. That’s why I offer bespoke clothing perfectly tailored to your body type, to put a smile on your face when you look in the mirror. This is also why I offer ready to wear clothing that fits how a woman likes her clothes to fit. I’m also becoming more conscious with my brands environmental impact, so I started a sustainable fashion line that consists of up cycled clothing, hand painted pieces and pieces made from scraps. I also offer tailor services, but unfortunately I’m only serving local customers at this time. Those in the Detroit and surrounding Metro Detroit Areas.
I’m also a content creator on instagram, TikTok and YouTube. YouTube is the platform I’m most passionate about, though. I spread knowledge on business, sewing and the fashion industry. I also do story-times and have a series called: getting the f out of dodge. Where I give you a real peak into the chaos that was/is my life, and take my community with me as I design my life ( all pun intended ). I created my YouTube channel to build a community and to let people see the regular girl behind Youreccentrics. I’d really love and appreciate if anyone reading this could subscribe and check out my videos !
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
I have been wanting to make a prom dress since 2022. At first, imma be honest, I was a little under qualified for the job. So, I’m not upset it didn’t happen when I wanted it to but rather on divine timing.
In 2023 I altered two prom dresses. This gave me the confidence that I could actually make one since I just spent the whole prom season reconstructing them. So, another prom season came and went… they was still sleeping on me. People that know me and know I’m a seamstress still over looked me. Potential customers reached out then ghosted me when it was time to pay the deposit. So when 2025 prom season came, I was on it. I took everything the rejection taught me and applied it. I opened my books up before school even started. Then, when school started I went on instagram and typed in common hashtags amongst senior girls. #seniorszn #lastfirstday and I got to commenting under every post I saw. I was hoping in DM’s and gmails basically saying, if you let me make yo prom dress, I’ll give you a discount. I was doing this for months.
Finally, I get a message back and someone was interested. I say it’s a $10 consultation fee and she pays it! I’m excited like, “omg she not gon ghost me because she paid $10”. I’m still traumatized tho, so leading up to the consultation I’m thinking “omggg, she not gon log into the zoom meeting.” “At least I made $10, I guess”. Then, the time comes and she joins the meeting, I show her my sketches and she likes them ! She wants to proceed with working with me and sends her deposit. Now im hitting the dougie, im super excited because I accomplished a 3 year goal. I am making a prom dress this year ! This story really inspires me because it shows how sometimes you gotta stop waiting for an opportunity to come and just make one.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I feel non creatives struggle to understand why I as a creative, will choose creativity over stability every time. I’ve never done well in corporate America. Some of the best money I’ve ever made was at the Post office but the work was uninspiring and the work place was dull and boring. All of that took a toll on me creatively and it showed in all of my creative work. Suddenly, I can’t think of any new designs, I’m too tired to create or I’m playing it safe while creating.
As a creative, it’s a spiritual/mental necessity to be in environments where my creativity can breathe and grow. To be in a space where my individuality can be expressed. If not, after a while it starts to feel like I’m living in a false reality, like I’m living a lie and it’s an unshakable feeling.
I understand most people, especially in America, can put this feeling to the side and just handle business such as bills, rent etc and all power to you, you rock ! But for me to insure my quality of life is the best it can be, I’d rather sacrifice stability in the present to build my life up in creativity because I know my creativity and eccentric thought process is the key to living my dream life as well as, bring generational wealth to my family.
