We recently connected with Shadi Asad and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shadi , thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
During a time of uncertainty (Covid) I had a choice to make with a business partner/friend. Either I finish out college with some degree I’ll never use, or drop out and start a gym. Thankfully I chose the 2nd option because of all the doors and opportunities that came with opening a gym business.
Shadi , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shadi Asad and I am 25 years old currently living in Austin Texas. Growing up as a kid, I was always super insecure about my body and was always hesitant to take my shirt off in front of people. Fast forward to my freshman year of college, I looked myself in the mirror and made a promise to myself that I will make a change because I can’t live the rest of my life like this. Fast forward a year into going to the gym, I knew I wanted to be in the fitness industry because I know if it made this much of an impact on my life, I could do the same for hundreds if not thousands of other people! So I became a certified personal trainer and got blessed with the opportunity to build a gym from the ground up with a few partners! The biggest problem I help people solve is their relationship with food and working out. Creating sustainable lifestyle changes that last a lifetime! I am most proud of the impact the gym has with people in the Austin community. The gym provides a space where all walks of life can come together for the common goal of bettering their lives and I’m proud to provide the space to do so! I want people to know that fitness is something that needs to be a part of everyone’s life for it’s proven benefits of lowering your mortality rate, stress levels and many more other things.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
We grew up playing baseball against each other at a young age and hated one another due to the rivalry. After sports, we didn’t hangout much at all until I ran into Bear (my partner) 10 years later in college. I had no clue we went to the same school and so we started to see each other somewhat often and communicating a lot more. He knew I was into fitness and so he brought up the idea of teaming up with another gentlemen (Scott) to build a gym. At this point, I was on my last year of college and had to make the decision to either finish out college, or drop out and go build this gym. Fast forward 2 years later, dropping out of college was the best decision I’ve made in my life.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Shoutout to a fellow client of mine that I train that recommended a book called The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni. It goes in depth about the necessary buy in from all team members to make a business run smoothly on all cylinders.
