We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaconda Simmons a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Shaconda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I worked for a big name tax company. I loved doing taxes. It upset me the prices that people had to pay for a simple return. I felt like I could serve people better by treating them like more that just a customer, at more affordable prices. So I left. I was also keeping up with my churches books at that time. It just dawned on me to turn it into a business. I had been between jobs for a couple of years due to some personal issues. I always thought this would be a side hustle, but 6 years later, I’m 100% self employed.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Since I’ve been in business, one of the things I am most proud of is the service I provide to my clients. I have obtained many clients because their previous financial professional made them feel less than important. My clients are my family. They all have direct access to me. While we have a team, any clients can always reach out to me.

We are a one stop shop. Clients can choose to use SSBKAM for all their business needs. Not just taxes and bookkeeping. We offer assistance with business set up. Provide notary services. Provide quickbooks setup up and cleanup. Even payroll processing. Businesses really do not have to go anywhere.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

I started my business with a prayer! I’ve not had to take out any loans, borrow any money, or anything. I worked the first five years. It was tiresome. Anything the business needed, like many entrepreneurs, I used my personal money.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?

From 2018-2022, I worked two jobs and ran my business. It was hard. In 2021 I quit one of those jobs. In 2022 I finally decided I didn’t want to work for anyone. It was scary. I was not in the financial position to do it really. But I had to step out on faith. Best decision I could have made.

Working at the hotel allowed me the time to build my business because I was able to do a lot of my work there. My bosses were very supportive.

As time went on, every year mw gross revenue doubled. Until year 5 it tripled! I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting to reach that milestone until 2026!
