Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shabaz Playtime. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Shabaz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
This topic means so much to me because I took a huge risk by leaving Houston and moving to Los Angeles, CA. As much as I second guessed myself when I first did it, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. One of my favorite quotes says “Your best life resides on the other side of FEAR” and I wholeheartedly believe that. Everyday so many of us think about things that we want to do but never do it because of the fear of failing, being too comfortable in their current situation, etc, but if you are reading this and you have dreams you want to achieve please do it. Don’t be that person at 60 years old saying I should have.GO DO IT. And I can tell you it won’t be easy but it’ll be worth it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Shabaz “Playtime” Ward and I’m a comedian from Jeanerette, LA now residing in Los Angeles, CA. I’ve always been funny but never in a million years did I think I would be a stand up comic. I think my style of comedy sets me apart from my peers. I talk about many topics and I don’t really have a structure just rapid fire. I’m most proud of myself for stepping out on faith and finding my purpose in life. For a while I didnt know what I wanted to do and felt lost, but found myself with comedy. As crazy as this may sound, no matter what I’m going through in life I get gratification in going on stage and making people forget about their problems. I just want everyone to win and do what they love in life. Not just live but Live in your purpose.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I will go always go back to my first week after moving to Los Angeles. Moving further away from my family, going from having my own spot to living in my homies backroom was definitely humbling for me. The first two weeks I literally just debated with myself if I made the right decision or not. One day I went in the mirror and had a heart to heart with myself. I got the tears out and said I’m here for a reason and stop second guessing myself. I had done the hard part in moving so now it was up to get up and do what God put me on this earth for and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
This is funny but what I will say is let a creative create. As cliche as it sounds, its more so of you may not understand why their doing it but dont discourage or try to stop them from doing what they want to do. Its hard telling someone why im doing so much to chase my dreams, when they’re scared to chase theirs. The creatives’s mind thinks so differently because no matter what we are doing we are constantly thinking of ideas or things that we can use to create the art we love to put it out to the world. In the end just appreciate the art and if you don’t like what a creative put out you dont have to slander it, just find a creative you like and support them.
