We recently connected with Sgv Vibes Music San Gabriel Valley Vibes and have shared our conversation below.
SGV VIBES MUSIC , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The band started back in 2017. We all in a way started from scratch with no experience whatsoever so learning the craft in the world of reggae has been fascinating. Just a couple of friends unwinding every Friday until our first show in 2018. Fast forward 2024 having to share the stage with Jamaican global reggae icons and heavy weights of the industry, has been an experience of its own, grasping new techniques and rhythms by these honorable artist and combining roots reggae to our Latin roots; became a major part of what SGV vibes sound is. It is incredibly rewarding to watch the band evolve and improve daily with more understanding of the craft.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We have an organic band that has a grassroots movement to connect with artists and management in the industry. As independent artists we are self managed and operate the business side as a team. Outside of the band we are a family unity and have the balance to operate as business partners / musicians. We created a brotherhood that drives us . The passion and Chicano spirit through our sound in reggae music drives us to create more powerful inspiring music . We create our sound for our own ears . We write together collectively for our own selves to release the vibrations of reggae through own interpretation. Our love for what reggae music represents can not be denied, and now that we have been on tours learning over the last 7 years on what it takes to be professional and grind until we find our next step in our musical journey . Through being active in the scene these last 7 years , you learn that anything can change at a show .Theres always improvising and adapting during technical difficulties , elongated set times , anything that comes with a changed schedule. We learned to working with lost time if a previous scenario before our stage time messed up the schedule. No show is granted that there won’t be any issues promoters stage managers and crew always seem to have an easy going working with us in case these issues occur on stage . Whenever these situations come up our fast acting ability to adapt makes crew and entire team involved in the show helps them remain calm and continue to finalize any event .No show is ever the same SGV Vibes is prepared for any scenario that may occur. One of the things we are more proud is the commitment from ever band member and the roles that they play . Whether its managing , treasurer, social media, promotion overall the commitment of a 6 member band to continue as an independent artist .

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Meeting and getting to know fans over the years from all walks of life backgrounds/ communities/ cultures/ ethnicities. Connecting to fans and knowing that our performances at venues such as the garden amphitheatre , people hearing our message listening to the lyrics it’s rewarding that our message is being sent and well received, people enjoying themselves freely accepting the power of reggae music . The contribution to the community makes it all worth it . The bigger artists from the span of the years that we looked up to . Our heroes Have been very welcoming and given tips on how to do certain things . Which has helped understand things to a higher level .

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Reggae music is known to be about peace love and unity . It is also rebel music against the establishment. It is also ghetto music from which we connected with . Learning the history of where the reggae icons came from , poverty , violence political oppression from the poor in Jamaica . As most of the band is first generation Americans , we could relate to the struggles of growing up in the hoods of the San Gabriel Valley . If you listen to our track “Rebel “ or “Masked Man “ you can hear the message of rebellion against political injustices . Reggae is also about creating a vibration that is felt into your spirit. During the early 70s Rastafari had a big impact on the genre and its message against the corrupt “Babylon” reached a worldwide audience with legendary Bob Marley and The Wailers that is heard until this day . Although the rebel spirit was there for the reggae icons of the past , the genre also created music about spreading love and positivity. “ lovers rock “ “dancehall all play a role in the dynamic messages of reggae . For us we want to be a part of that journey and our music has all that in the message .
