We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sevyn Waters a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sevyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
The legacy I hope to build is not necessarily based on financial success or achievement but rather on the desire for service-oriented success that comes from fully realizing my creativity and identity. As a creative writer and business owner, I hope to use my perception of the world – the beauty that’s already here and the potential for its future – to help people experience it more deeply, whether that’s through written words or sharing ways to access travel through my app, Terra Nova Travels (coming soon!). I hope to be remembered as someone who was kind, selfless, and deeply passionate about making the world a more beautiful place than I found it. This is the type of legacy I hope to leave.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Sevyn Michaela-Rose Waters and I’m a writer, editor, and entrepreneur. I’m from Atlanta, Georgia but spent most of my childhood traveling the world because my mom was a professional tennis player. This kind of upbringing brought to light the variety of cultures, people, and nature across the globe and deeply inspired me to write what I saw.
This upbringing was a catalyst for my studying writing at Savannah College of Art and Design where I graduated with a BFA. My love for learning didn’t end there as I’ve just finished a master’s program in creative writing at the University of Edinburgh. I would say my writing is inspired by nature, grief, and human interconnectedness and while I am currently working on a novel surrounding these themes, I am also in the process of developing a travel app called Terra Nova Travels with hopes to bring more accessibility and ease to travel planning. When I’m not writing, I’m typically cooking, enjoying nature, or hopping on a plane to a new destination.
I currently have work published in From Arthur’s Seat, Savannah Magazine, Port City Review, Square95, and District.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that I get to dive into the unknown, the stillness, the thing that is under the surface that connects all of us. And it’s not easy. It can be incredibly difficult to open myself up to the nuance of grief or relational intimacy because it’s demanding of my emotions. However, this difficulty only makes the result more rewarding because I know my work has the power to make a reader feel seen, understood, or inspired. There is so much fulfillment in this.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is simply to make the world we live in more hopeful and more beautiful. Through my work as a writer and entrepreneur, I want everything I create to lead to hope and discovery, whether it’s within oneself or in one’s surrounding relationships or environment. I believe there is power in creating things and therefore responsibility. I am very passionate about this because as a creative, I’m wielding a pen and what comes from it goes out into the world. For me, it’s always important to be intentional about what I want to release into it and how I want to leave readers feeling.
