We recently connected with Sevyn Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Sevyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Starting a clientele based business was very hard. I initially started in a barbershop. I would have family and friends come in so clients would see me working and what I did so that would be intrigued to want my services. After that I went to a suite in Birmingham, MI. It was super slow. I knew I was good, I worked real hard practicing taking so many continued education classes but I wasn’t sure how to convey that to potential clients. I went months with maybe 1-5 clients per week. It really didn’t help me at all that I never worked in a large spa. So I had to teach myself A LOT. I basically treated my clients how I wanted to be treated. I know what feels good and what dosen’t. I moved from the suite to a salon/spa in Ferndale and my clientele grew from there. I went from 1-5 a week to 1-8 A DAY. I would do so well clients would just refer other people to me and welp the rest is history.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always had a passion for science. In skincare industry as you can imagine you are basically using products that give you a reaction. You are exfoliating the skin, making clients brighter, treating acne means killing bacteria etc. TONS of science/biology. As I begin to learn more and have more clients I became a natural at skincare.
I have help many people clear their skin and get their self esteem back. So many times I have been told by my clients they have been trying to correct certain issues for years and they never saw results until they started coming to me and following my regimens.
I am so proud that I actually stuck in there and finished what I dreamed of my business to be. I usually never see things to the end, I get discouraged. But I knew I wanted a spa of my own and to teach others what I knew about skin care.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Covid-19 was devastating to my business. Imagine this, you finally open your spa that you have been doing construction on for 3 years prior. November 19, 2019 was the day. The grand opening was amazing, the Mayor of Detroit was present along with other city leaders, family and friends. There was literally standing room only in the spa and we sold out of almost all products on the shelves. THEN March 2020 we were SHUT DOWN. A deadly virus was killing people left and right. Well my job requires me to be at least 12-18 inches from your face and NOW we must stand 6ft APART.
I did not know what to expect, I thought my business was OVER and no one was going to want my services because of the health risk. We were closed for 4 months. As the states opened back up. Clients began to come back surprisingly. Then we were SHUT DOWN AGAIN. I just couldn’t catch a break. After a few rounds of shut downs. We manage to open up our spa and never experience any staff catching Covid-19.
We made it thru and we are still open TODAY. It was very tough, couldn’t get products a shortage of everything. Our clients believed in us so much and love our results driven skin care nothing could stop them from visiting with us. Its a total vibe at Skin Bar VII. We are very grateful.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Results. I am dedicated to my craft and learning as much as I can about it. Skin Care can sometimes have trending services. You have to know what really works and whats gimmicky. I established trust with my clients by delivering results. Once they see you know what you are talking about the almighty word of mouth kicks in. They will tell everyone they know and when you name continues to ring with good feedback. You have given yourself a seat and the big kids table in the industry your in.
