Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sevn Strickland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sevn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk of quitting my job to pursue my career as a cake artist. In 2020 Covid hit and everything closed down. I was a freelance make up artist. I started losing business because there was a multi state wide emergency and shutdown. No one could come out therefore events were canceled and no one needed to be glammed up! I started working at Ulta and it wasn’t for me at all. I was overworked and treated poorly. So I quit and never looked back.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m Sevn THE Cake florist and cake coach. I am a self taught cake artist who has a passion for color and art with a sprinkle of sugar! I started baking during the 2020 pandemic to serve as therapy and a coping skill for depression. By using all of my talents and skills I’ve acquired throughout my entire life such as nail art, nail science, cosmetics, cosmetology and color theory I turned that into something I’ve never thought would be my passion and career destiny.
I offer custom luxe cupcakes and what I like to call designer cakes! Very unique and personal to each client. I also teach online classes and created what is now The Cake Florist Academy! An online virtual campus that has 3 groups named Arts Center where I teach decor, Business & marketing which teaches all things structure and brand awareness. Lastly we have the Recipe & foundation group where I teach cake recipes, buttercream recipes, cake basics and more!
Here at The Cake Florist I pride myself in being colorful but still LUXE. A lot of times people think luxury is bland colors of nudes, beige and gold all the time. Color doesn’t mean less luxe!
With each client that gets a baked good from me will encounter a customer service like no other and a high quality products fit to please their taste buds!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my presence on social media from ground up! No paid ads, no sponsors, no hand outs. I showed up as myself authentically and remained true to my core values. If you’re just starting out show up every day until people have no choice but to see you!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Showing up in the cake world with many skills and techniques that are under the art umbrella pushed me forward and towards the top. I came in with no baking skills but my previous art skills came in handy!
